Nobody was more surprised than Levi Kreis when he won the 2010 Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Muscial for his explosive portrayal of the legendary rock and roll pianist Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet.

America’s Got Talent producers saw Amy as next the viral sensation to come out of the reality TV show and Entertainment Tonight even went so far as to hail Amy Armstrong as the next Susan Boyle.

There is a presence is in the room today! The spirit of Janis Joplin is haunting us in a very good way since we’ve been joined by her modern day equivalent- the rockingly awesome Jen Porter.

Jen is truly a powerhouse diva and one of my favorite local talents. A lifelong musician with a great set of pipes, Jen has performed a wide range of gigs. From singing the National Anthem at many Major League Baseball games to “sing-a-longs” with the Girl Scouts at the National Mall in Washington D.C., from large rock and roll venues to small intimate cabaret clubs- Jen Porter is a versatile woman, and not just in a musical sense! Wink, wink.

Known for her uncanny vocal resemblance to Janis Joplin (and looking a bit like a Posh Agent Starling/Jodie Foster I might add), Jen transcends her own soulful voice to create a modern, folksy sound that appeals to just about everyone. With a wide repertoire of pop covers and original music, Jen can hammer out pretty much any song you ask of her as you will see on today’s show.

Anyone got a quarter for her? She’s a human jukebox.

I love doing these type of shows. From time to time we bring some of the best musicians you may not know about and have them strut their stuff in our home studio, a sort of “unplugged” setting where their song and their voice stand alone and shine.

According to Radiohead’s frontman Thom Yorke, the music industry is on the brink of collapse. Many established musicians are successfully suing their labels to become free from deals that have soured. Damian Kulash of OK Go and Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls are some of the many artists who’ve cut their ties to a label and are now free agents in the brave new world of the internet.

But for many openly gay musicians faced with discrimination, being Indie has long been their only career choice. Philadelphia musician Aiden James creates his own music and controls his own career. In essence, musicians like him are their own record label and they turn to their fans to finance their latest projects to reap the rewards firsthand.

But what about Lady Gaga?

It’s impossible to go to hear live music without a reference to the incredibly successful and record label signed pop star. Inevitably, someone in the audience will scream “Play ‘Poker Face!’” or “Bad Romance” but “Alejandro,” not so much.

Music companies closely follow Lady Gaga’s career not just because she may be the savior of gay men or even because they like her music, but they do want to see how someone signed under a big name record label like Universal Music can survive in the age of independence and the internet.

Levi Kreis brought some southern sensibility to this Sunday’s Tony Awards when he won for featured actor in a musical for his portrayal of rocker Jerry Lee Lewis in “Million Dollar Quartet.”

We interviewed Levi as he had just moved to Chicago to perform in the trial run of “Million Dollar Quartet” the musical that won him the Tony. Congratulations! Originally posted on Oct. 9, 2008.

Raise the roof y’all! Levi Kreis is in the house and there’s a whole lotta shaking going on.

Forgive my corny pun, but the dazzling singer and piano rocker is in Chicago at the Goodman theater co-starring in the new musical “Million Dollar Quartet” about the legendary Sun records jam session that took place on December 4, 1956, when four of popular music’s most extraordinary talents (Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley) who were all in their creative prime, came together for a night of music that would help lay the foundation for rock and roll.

Levi Kreis embodies the rebellious musician Jerry Lee Lewis in the show and wows the audience with both his on and off piano acrobatics and the power of his raw, passionate voice.

In many ways, Levi is a lot like the musical legend he portrays- Levi was expelled from his Baptist University for questioning the Bible’s take on homosexuality and Jerry Lee Lewis challenged the moral code of his day. They both reject of their conservative upbringing while still embracing its musical roots.

All Hail Queen Joan, the boogie woogie queen from the Bayou! We are thrilled to have discovered musician Joan Atwell’s YouTube channel, Ivory Tickler Mama, where she plays love songs on her accordion to all the animals on her farm.

Think of Joan as the horse whisperer but instead of whispering to the horses she’s banging on her accordion and wailing out her favorite ditties to all the cats, dogs and cows.

Joan claims her menagerie of animals love her music and we do too! We love hearing her animals bark and moo along in a wonderfully wacky chorus to her music. It’s just a matter of time before Joan’s wild videos become a viral hit.

While her husband works a long hard day in a chicken processing plant, Joan also jams on the piano with her mom, who she calls momma Kat, or is it her cat named momma cat? We’re not sure.

We’ve got a special show for you today, blues musician Gaye Adegbalola plays her greatest hits in our studio. She’s wrapping up her farewell tour with her band Saffire and getting ready to work on a new solo album. Today Gaye is here to talk about her work in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, what drives her passion in music and why fighting shame is so critical for gay liberation.

We first met Gaye back in 2005 at the Out Music Awards where she wowed the crowd with her audacious song “Big Ovaries” looking absolutely stunning wearing a white tuxedo with tails that complimented her silver shock of hair and dark skin. We were charmed by her then and we are so pleased to finally have her in the studio performing such wonderfully outrageous songs such as “Bareback Rider” and “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” which tells the tale of love that just may not be worth it.

Gaye’s put out six critically acclaimed albums, a live album and thousands of shows with her musical collaborators Ann Rabson and Andra Faye in Saffire, which is on their final tour, so catch these fabulous woman while you still can.

Way before Melissa Etheridge and k.d. lang came out of the closet as loving the ladies, Gretchen Phillips wrote songs about the joys of being queer. Being a lesbian in her view was not only fabulous, but hilarious! One of her biggest hits was with the band Two Nice Girls and their song “I Spent My Last $10 (on Birth Control and Beer)” gained national attention, including a mention in Rolling Stone Magazine.

The band broke eventually up, but their music lives on. Last year, they re-released their first album on iTunes for everyone to enjoy.

Forgive my corny pun, but the dazzling singer and piano rocker is in Chicago at the Goodman theater co-starring in the new musical “Million Dollar Quartet” about the legendary Sun records jam session that took place on December 4, 1956, when four of popular music’s most extraordinary talents (Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley) all in their creative prime, came together for a night of music that would help lay the foundation for rock and roll.

Levi Kreis embodies the rebellious musician Jerry Lee Lewis in the show, wowing audiences both with his on and off piano acrobatics both and the power of his raw, passionate voice.

In many ways Levi carries the essence of the musical legend both in his rejection of his Baptist conservative upbringing but still embracing it’s musical roots. Levi Kreis was expelled from his Baptist University for questioning the Bible’s take on homosexuality and Jerry Lee Lewis also challenged the moral code of his day.
