You’re probably familiar with all the times Bugs Bunny crossed dressed for laughs in all the Warner Brothers cartoons, but did you know that accidentally kissing a man while dressed up as a woman was a regular comedy bit in the vaudeville circuit?

Watch “A Woman” from 1915, one of the few times Charlie Chaplin appeared in his films without his iconic mustache. In the short 20 minute movie, Charlie dresses up as to sneak into a sexy lady’s house, but her overprotective father and his friend fall in love with him instead. Who knew Charlie Chaplin had such a handsome face behind that crazy Hitler mustache?

From what I’ve heard, this film was made at the Essanay studios right here in Chicago, just blocks away from where we tape the Feast of Fun podcast and make many of our drag videos for YouTube. I like to think that here in Chicago we’re following in Charlie Chaplin’s footsteps.

Y.O.U. Pandora? Just minutes after Madonna performed “Give Me All Your Lovin’” at the Superbowl, Sherry Vine posted her parody, “Give Me All Your Muff.” I’m liking this a lot and I don’t even mind the ad in the video. A girl’s gotta get paid!

Check out the not-so-surpise twist ending where they start making out, or as Madonna would say “she is the baby pop star, and I am kissing her to pass my energy on to her.” Watch out Pandora Boxx! You don’t know where that mouth has been.

Hopefully Pandora Boxx will have a nervous breakdown in the near future and shave off her head, just like Britney Spears.

Marioneta Fuego is part-time Facebook hunk Jonny K Jouet’s drag queen puppet alter ego. When he’s not busy making videos with his drag queen puppet, Jonny likes to show off his naked body on Facebook for anyone who will watch. My kind of guy.

I think I can smell the sexiness of Jonny K Jouet, or is something burning in the kitchen?

We actually met Jonny our first year of podcasting back when we used to walk around our neighborhood like madmen with microphones interviewing anyone who we met. Jonny ran into us at the coffee shop and we all hit it off.

Now he’s my review:

Jonny, I’m a bit concerned about the stitching on Marionetta’s lips. Is she supposed to be a plastic surgery addict like Jocelyn Wildenstein?

The popsicle stick drag queens was a stroke of genius, and who can argue that Mike Ruiz is one of the hottest men on television, despite being on that douchebag-o-rama of a show “The A List.” Nice work Jonny! Sashay, you stay.

Manila Luzon has a new video “Hot Couture” featuring a dazzling array of costumes and wigs, including a delicious dessert table dress.

You might enjoy watching the drag queens as they bitterly eat cake off of Manila, but the highlight of the video for me was seeing baby Manila Luzon getting caught prancing around in drag by her mom. Watch to see what happens!

Narrative is so important, especially in music videos. Nice work Manila! Sashay, you stay.

Judging from the majority of commenters on Joe My God, Dangerous Minds, and my Twitter feed, this will only have the effect of boosting cookie sales this year, as it seems people are no longer willing to put up with (let’s face it) bigots using their children as puppets to bully and ostracize other more vulnerable children. I’m already calling my family back States-side to buy some boxes on my behalf. I’ll pay extra for shipping! Mmmmm, Thin Mints and Tagalongs for great justice!

Although historically, the use of glitter-like substances dates way back to Paleolithic times, and the US Army even considered sending glitter out the back of airplanes to confuse radar during WWII, it wasn’t until recently that that this common crafting item was weaponized at the hands of Glitivists.

Do glitter bombs represent a violent assault deserving of criminal charges as critics like Mike Huckabee would like you to believe? Or are they “non-lethal and non-violent manifestations of immense fabulousness” as Dan Choi affirms.  Whether you can “feel the rainbow”, or have a shimmering mess on your rug to clean up for years to come, what better time than Glitter Day, to reflect on a glitzy new trend that gleamed its way into political protest theatre in 2011.

#1 Target: Newt Gingrich

Date: May 17, 2011 • City: Minneapolis, MN

Glittivsit: Nick Espinosa

We begin in May, where Newt Gingrich was glitter bombed at a book signing hosted by the Minnesota Family council, backers of anti-gay marriage ban in Minneapolis (once thought of as the hippest and gayest city in America).

24-year-old former social worker, community organizer, and alleged glitter mastermind, Nick Espinosa, shouted,  “Feel the rainbow, Newt! Stop the hate! Stop anti-gay politics! Its dividing our country and its not fixing our economy” as he dumped confetti-like flakes of gunmetal glitter onto the former speaker from what appeared to be a cereal or cracker box. Gingrich reacted with “Nice to live in a free country,” while a security guard pushed Espinosa out of the room, scolding him to “Do it like a man” and that “so goes you, goes the rotting of our country.”

Later, Espinosa told the HuffPost, “I think glitter’s a lot of fun”. He added, “it definitely makes an impact. The way that his campaign is going on this week, he was in need of a makeover”.  On a side note: In 2010, Espinosa penny bombed Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, dumping $20 in pennies on the Emmer’s lap while he was seated for dinner at the O’l Mexico Restaurant.

#2 Target: Tim Pawlenty

Date: June 16^th, 2011 • City: San Francisco, CA 

Glittivists: Nancy Macias and Chelsea Byers

In June, former Minnesota Governor and GOP presidential candidate, Tim Pawlenty was glitter bombed by members of CODE PINK, during a book signing of  Courage to Stand with what looked to be a mixture of pink Easter grass and fine powder-like glitter.

In an emotionally charged display, Nancy Macias and Chelsea Byers shouted, “Where is your courage to stand?”… “Stand for reproductive rights! Stand for gay rights. .Tim Pawlenty, welcome to San Francisco, home of Gay hero, Harvey Milk!” as they were dragged away from the site of the glittering.

#3 Target: Michelle Bachmann

Date: June 18^th, 2011 • City: Minneapolis, MN 

Glittivists: Rachel Lang

Later in June, Michelle Bachmann was welcomed into the Glitter Hall of Fame as she exited the stage of the Rightonline Conference. As the Star Spangled Banner blared on the loud speakers, glitter shrapnel barely missed Ms. Bachman and could have scratched a cornea, or worse yet embedded itself into her scalp.

As Rachel Lang of GETEQUAL flung glitter from her thermos, she charged, “You can run, but you can’t hide”.  Now if this were a top ten list, this would not be the number one glitter bombing, and although I admire her spirit, perhaps Ms. Lang could benefit from a glitter training camp where she could work on her aim and thrust.

Shortly after the glittering, Nick Espinosa took to the podium and proclaimed “Viva La Glitterati: Let the Glitter Games begin”.  In an interview about the incident, he proclaimed “Today. . is the start of a national movement coast to coast. We are part of the Glitterati now and we invite. . all Americans who believe in equality” to “ take the glitter into your own hands and join the glitterati movement!”

#4 Target: Bachmann & Associates

Date: July 21^st, 2011 • City: Minneapolis, MN 

Glittivists: Nick Espinosa & Gay Barbarians

It was only a matter of time after Marcus Bachmann called gays  “Barbarians” who needed to be “disciplined”, that he would be come the target of the Glitterati.

In July, Espinosa assembled a motley crew decked out in faux furs and spandex animal print leggings reminiscent of the Flintstones. This Glitter Flash Mob stormed the lobby of Bachmann & Associates, Bachmann’s own pray away the gay “clinic” where young gay people are sent to become straight as Espinosa tweeted messages like “barbarians at the gates”.

The Gay Barbarians demanded to meet with Marcus Bachmann, himself. Although they were unsuccessful at an actual glitter dump on Bachmann, they did shower the lobby, including an oriental carpet, which I’m sure will be very hard to clean for some time. As the Barbarians exited, they chanted, “You can’t pray the gay away, baby I was born this way” and “Hey Marcus, What’s in your closet?

#5. Target: Minnesota for Marriage

Date: September 4^th, 2011 • City: St. Paul, MN

Glittivists:  Minnesotans United for All Families

In September, it rained glitter at the Minneapolis State Fair when four people on the SkyGlider ride dumped several pounds of glitter over the anti-gay, Minnesota for Marriage booth, shouting “Equality for All”.

Four people from Minnesotans United for All Families were behind the glitter shower after the group was denied a booth at the fair. Donald McFarland from the group said, “They made it very, very clear that there was no room and we weren’t coming to the fair,” Nick Espinosa who was part of the action said that no one was apprehended, and that the glitterati “just got off the sky ride and continued to enjoy the fair.”

#6. Target: Erik Paulson

Date: October 7^th 2011 • City: Minneapolis, MN

Glittivist: Michael Cahill

October saw the glitter bombing of Congressman, Erik Paulsen, while receiving a “Friend of the Family” award for his effort to rewrite the MN state constitution to ban same-sex marriages at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Strategy Session. “You’re no friend to my family!” exclaimed Michael Cahill, a survivor of so-called gay “reparative therapy” as he showered Erik Paulsen with glitter.

#7 TARGET: Karl Rove

Date: October 7^th, 2011 • City: Minneapolis, MN

Glittivist: Ben Egerman

Later in the day at the Faith and Freedom Conference, former deputy chief of staff and Bush’s Brain, Karl Rove was glitter bombed by Ben Egerman, who could be heard shouting, “Feel the Rainbow” and “stop the hate, no bigotry in politics!”

As the sparkles dispersed, a woman can be heard saying, “Get the police here!” Another whispers, “Damn it!” Rove resolves, “keep signing it.”  Police took Egerman away for questioning. Nick Espinoza (who wasn’t present at this glitter bombing) told the Huff Post, “I wasn’t there but I heard that they interrogated him and was told that he was being taken to the Bloomington police department to be charged with assault. However, 20 minutes later I got a call that he was free and no charges would be filed.”

#8 & #9 TARGET: Dan Savage

Date: November 1 & 9, 2011 • Cities: Eugene, OR and Irvine, CA

Glittivists: Dan Savage Welcoming Committee, Unidentified Trans Student

November, was a glitter on glitter month, when sex advice columnist, blogger, and “It gets Better” creator, Dan Savage was glitter bombed by Trans activists first at the University of Oregon as part of the “Dan Savage Welcoming Committee”.

The Huff post reported that during the session, “the operative leapt to the stage and poured glitter over Dan’s head as they shouted, ‘Dan Savage is a transphobe!’ As they turned tail, they added, ‘Glitterbomb courtesy of the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee,’ and just before they got out the door, ‘He’s a racist and misogynist and a rape-apologist, too!’ The operative then fled the scene.  

Just a week later, on November 9^th, Queerty reported a 2^nd on-campus glitter bombing – this time at the University of California Irvine by a trans student, who took offense to Savage’s use of the terms “shemale” and “freaky tranny porn” to label straight men who view trans porn. The student was arrested, while Savage said the being gay, he loves glitter.

#10. TARGET: Randal Terry

Date: December 19, 2011 • City: Manchester, NH

GLITIVIST: Vermin Supreme

The year in Glitter Bombing ended with an unusual theatrical gem at a Democratic Presidential Debate when performance artist, Vermin Supreme glittered Randall Terry, pro-life founder of Operation Rescue to an amused electorate. Watch more on Vermin Supreme’s platform here.

What will 2012 bring in Glitter Bombings? Should we expect glitter-related lawsuits? A glitter fatality? Flesh-eating glitter?  Or worse, arts & craft stores on lock down? Only time can tell.

Looks like 2012 is kicking off to be the year of “shit people say” videos of every color of the rainbow. Here’s the latest by Hugh Jasoll and Black Dahlia Parton, two fab trans folks from TransFix! in the SF/Bay Area.

Just in time for Three Kings Day- Have fun as Daphne Dumont, Saltina Obama Bouvier and Lola Von Miramar teach you how to make coquito, a delicious Puerto Rican Christmas beverage. Think of it as a coconut based egg nog!

RECIPE
Pour the following ingredients into a blender:

• 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk.
• 12 oz. can of evaporated milk.
• 15 oz. can of cream of coconut
• 1 can full of white rum
• 1 tablespoon of vanilla

Once you’re done blending, place a cinnamon stick inside the rum bottle, pour the coquito mixture in and refrigerate for at least a couple of hours, but preferably up to a week, to allow the flavors to meld.

Mmm! It creamy and delicious. Don’t worry about spilling any, you can just lick it up!

Go ahead and drink it if you want to get your party started quickly. A lot of people in Puerto Rico over the holidays make these ahead of time and give them away as presents, the alcohol helps keep everything preserved in your fridge for weeks (if it lasts that long.)

The ad, entitled “Tampons Drag It”, features two ladies engaged in some femmer-than-thou competition in front of a bathroom mirror, ending abruptly when one (presumably female-assigned-at-birth) lady brandishes a tampon like some sort of holy symbol, and the other (presumably male-assigned-at-birth) lady rolls her eyes and stalks off.

This isn’t the first time a tampon ad has set up drag queens as chumps ‘cuz they don’t menstruate; this one supposedly commissioned (but rejected) by Always went viral last August. Both also seem to confuse and conflate drag queens with trans women, some of whom do in fact wish they had functioning female reproductive parts (although more for the sake of bearing their own kids than having to avoid wearing white trousers one week out of every month), whereas drag queens would probably only want to do what Pandora Boxx would.

This most recent ad by Libra does a double-backhand slap of portraying female-identified women as appearance-obsessed and competitive, only to imply in the end that it’s the girls who can bleed for seven days and not die that are the “real” girls. The Wellington Young Feminist Collective and other Australia/New Zealand-based blogs have been pummelling Libra’s Facebook Wall with threats to boycott and demands for an apology until they retract this ad (which for the record, has run at least thrice on TV while I’ve typed this).

If Libra knows what’s good for them, they’ll do as HELL Pizza did last month and back off this unnecessarily divisive and thoughtlessly demeaning attempt to drum up business. Not just so I can order pizza and use tampons in good conscience, but so my trans girlfriends can stop being blindsided over and over by this sort of crap.

Turns out, Pink wasn’t always for girls and Blue wasn’t always for boys. According to a 1918 article from Earnshaw’s Infant’s Department,

“The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.”

After watching this clip, I am reminded of the work of the B.L.O. (Barbie Liberation Organization), who performed gender “corrective surgery” on hundreds of Barbies and GI Joes to reverse their voice boxes before sending shopgivers to replace them back to store shelves to unsuspecting customers in the early 90′s

Throughout the various articles published on her life and death, she is alternately referred to as “transgender” and “drag performer”, and occasionally by the Maori term “whakawahine” (fah-kah-wah-HEE-nay) which refers to ‘one who lives as a woman’ (compare to the Samoan “fa’afafine”).

However you define her, Carmen was a colourful boundary-breaking character, a former street worker turned dancer and entertainment entrepreneur, and once ran for Mayor of Wellington (a position later won by the world’s first openly trans MP Georgina Beyer, also of Maori descent), all during an era still marked by retrograde and phobic attitudes towards homosexuality and rigid gender roles.

A karakia (prayer) for the dead follows, in te reo Maori, the language of the indigenous people of Aotearoa-New Zealand. Phrased so that it is appropriate for pakeha (people not of Maori descent) to say:

Tena Koutou i o koutou tini mate
No reira, haere e nga mate
Haere ki te wa kainga

Translated into English:
Greetings to your many dead
Therefore, farewell the dead
Go to the home of all time

If you guess my inspiration to be “Googled for ‘Johnny Depp goatee’”, you are correct, sir! Johnny’s like the easiest drab for me to do, having similar bone structure and usually the same hair length. I do need to work out more, though, since my shoulders are quite puny in comparison.

Any other gals want to join in, even if it’s just a Sharpie mustache, do it!

Well, HELL Pizza, a very popular pizza chain here in New Zealand, has crossed a line and infuriated many, with a misfortune cookie containing the message: “You will marry a transgender”. Customer Tamsyn Clemerson was shocked to find it, and shared a photo of the message and cookie wrapper on her Facebook Wall. It was shared several times around, and resulted in several outraged responses on HELL Pizza’s Facebook Page, all generally expressing the sentiment that portraying a relationship with a trans person as a “misfortune” is bigoted and in poor taste.

Calls have been made to local store managers and marketing divisions, and so far no one contacted was at all aware of the transphobic message being among the regular run of misfortunes. No official statement has been released by HELL regarding the message, thus far.

Some past controversies HELL has been known for have included a billboard with a picture of former US President George W. Bush, with the caption: “HELL’s too good for some evil bastards”, and another billboard promoting hot cross buns for Easter: “For a limited time. Kind of like Jesus.” All potentially offensive to someone, but I will argue that, as an immortal religious icon and a wealthy political figure respectively, Jesus and Bush aren’t much affected personally by such statements.

In a world where trans people are still regarded with revulsion, mistreated and attacked on a regular basis, we don’t need more attempts at “shocking” humor like this one. I am generally a fan of HELL Pizza, having them in my regular home-delivery rotation, and sincerely hope they discontinue this particular “misfortune” so we can all have a good customer-service relationship again.

I’m not sure what’s going on in this video other than fierce drag. I think it’s a trailer for a drag night but I don’t know.
