Teri Yaki’s been working hard to transform herself into Amanda Steinstein, for our very special What Not to Wear/Feast of Fools viewing party at Hydrate in Chicago on Oct 17 (yes, the date changed from the 10th)

Watch on a jumbo screen as Fausto Fernós and Marc Felion raid Amanda’s closest, try on some of her clothes, stalk her around town and then surprise her with a makeover in this reality TV show.

We spent many days this summer being the concerned friends, stalking Amanda Steinstein even breaking into her apartment while she was gone to ruffle through her wardrobe, costumes and tiaras. Yes, tiaras.

The crew told us that our episode is probably the gayest one ever and that Amanda was the most challenging person (read:worst dressed) they have ever had on the show.

Peaches Christ talks about films originally made for women, but that have taken on a life of their own as camp classics for gay men in “Chick Flicks for Gay Men” .

Here’s a clip from the 1953 film “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” where Jane Russell’s character is on a cruise ship surrounded by the U.S. Men’s Olympic Team. For for some reason this all male scantily clad group is not attracted to poor Jane at all. Could it be that they are all gay? Well, all the butt shaking routines choreographed by Jack Cole could certainly suggests exactly that.

Jack Cole was one of Hollywood’s great gay choreographers and is noted for creating “theater dance.” Cole’s unmistakable style influenced the work of people like Bob Fosse and Tommy Tune and countless other directors of music videos, theater and film. I wonder how many drag queens in the world today owe their style of performance to this great man?

From his biography, he was said to be a demanding and relentless taskmaster in his pursuit of dance excellence. Check it out for yourself.

Why Mask?

We like to joke that the masking fetish is really for lazy trannies who don’t want to go through the trouble of putting on make up. It’s fun to say but it may not be true.

Everyone Forever described the desire for masking as “from the wearer’s point of view, the mask provides an opportunity to be completely surrounded by the powerful smells and tactile qualities of latex. They can heighten sensitivity and fear/excitement in the way leather and rubber sensory-deprivation hoods used in BDSM scenarios do. And because many of the maskers combine the mask with tight-fitting corsets and layered clothing, there can also be an element of containment or bondage.”

But why the feminine element? What do you think the real attraction to masking is?

This 1982 special starring the fantastic Miss Piggy, voiced by the amazing Frank Oz, is called “The Fantastic Miss Piggy Show!”

The show had it all: Miss Piggy sings. Miss Piggy dances. Miss Piggy gets lowered in a pink bubble like Glinda the Good Witch in the Wizard of OZ. It’s fabulous. It’s gay. It’s glamorous. It’s hysterical! I suspect that many a budding drag queen saw this and was immediately inspired.

I am posting her opening number, “There’ll Be Some Changes Made Today,” in honor of the new and improved Feast of Fools website!

And the piéce de resistance is Piss Miggy.. er.. Miss Piggy performing Gloria Gaynor’s disco classic “I Will Survive.” Miss Piggy has survived quite well and so has the Feast of Fools. Happy Birthday, Feast of Fools!

The move towards the larger society’s embrace of gay culture not always a clear line. The internet has done a great deal to allow GLBT people to carve out a voice for themselves in the world, this year I’ve never seen more YouTube/Internet queer celebrities Perez Hilton, Chris Crocker and to some extent the sexually ambiguous Tay Zonday on network television talk shows than ever before.

We’re up for the top prize of podcasting, the People’s Choice Podcast Award, which by many is seen as the Oscar of Podcasts. And you’re all welcome to join us at the ceremony, Friday September 28 in Los Angeles.

All this is big, because it feels like for the first time ever, you don’t just have ONE person breaking out, but many are people doing it and doing it well.

So if GLBT people are breaking the glass ceiling of online and broadcast entertainment, how have drag shows been impacted at your local gay bar?

In today’s interview we’re talking to Trannyshack founder and host Heklina who will be interviewed by us in person at our LIVE Podcast event at the Stud Bar in San Francisco, Wednesday Oct. 3, 7pm.

Heklina comments on how American society has changed with it’s views about drag queens:

“I think that Drag queens are still the eunuch clown that’s safe to laugh at. It’s definitively not shocking anymore. So I dont know if America’s really embraced it. The early 90s was when RuPaul and it was the first time any drag queen had mainstream exposure. I don’t really see a drag queen breaking out like that [again.]“

Happy Birthday Sal-E! A week and a half late, but still we want to wish you a Happy Birthday nevertheless.

How did Sal-E celebrate his birthday? With a enormous circus themed party full of bearded ladies, tattooed freaks and hot muscle men. Although Sal-E was dressed as the ring master, it really seemed like the whole event was out of control. Dense and full of sights and sounds of the circus, Sal-E and his motley crew transformed the Circuit nightclub into a colorful nightmare of carnival delights.

Yes it was great.

Aurora plans to compete in one of the nation’s largest female impersonator beauty pageants, where you have to have all your “original plumbing” in order to enter. I’m not sure who has the job of inspecting their nether regions, but I’m sure all contestant are too legit to quit.

What’s Aurora’s strategy to win? Look beautiful, of course.

Hairspray Preview

Here’s the official trailer to the upcoming movie of the musical of the John Waters movie “Hairspray.” This new movie really has the look of the old one—the costumes, sets, and hair are all right out of the 1987 version of 1963. The play re-interpreted the original movie’s mix of wild styles and drab settings with more of an all-around candy-colored fantasy look, but the second movie has de-interpreted all that. “Grease 2″ star Michelle Pfeiffer looks good in the Debbie Harry role, but some may wish that the real Debbie had been cast again. (By “some may,” I mean “I do.”)

“Grease 1″ star John Travolta in the Divine part is a complicated situation. Wouldn’t it be great if he shattered all of our low expectations and knocked our socks off with the gale force of a Jennifer Hudson (or a Sparty)? Nothing in the clip says that’s going to happen, but you might notice that all the brief glimpses of JT are from before the big makeover scene. So maybe there’s hope yet?

But these costumes and the ambient grooviness are enough even to chase off these bad vibes.

My plans for the evening of 9/11/01 were to attend a west Chelsea art opening by transsexual singing sensation Amanda Lear. I didn’t make it–but she didn’t cancel! Amanda was the muse of Spanish artist Salvador Dali and is a major star in her native Europe.

She had a splash on the French charts with her own unimpassioned interpretation of the theme from the Love Boat. Her “singing” “style” is often generously compared to Marlene Dietrich, and despite their many differences, people are constantly getting her mixed up with Amanda Lepore.

Today we conclude Marc Felion’s trip to England with his backstage interviews at TrannyShack done at London’s Soho Revue Bar, formerly known as Too2Much with of some of the area’s most outlandish and memorable drag queens.

Listen as Marc talks to a Dutch drag queen Vanilla Lush, who isn’t into dykes an ex-pat drag queen from the original Trannyshack in San Francisco, Suppository Spelling and a super Euro-trash musician Dusty O.

Dusty used to hang with Boy George in the 80s and found herself portrayed in his musical about Leigh Bowery’s life “Taboo.” She had much to say about intellectual property rights among drag queens and the problems with impersonation, imitation and stealing.
