Many people were surprised when Cher won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her leading role in Moonstruck.

When asked how she had the courage to take so many risky moves in her career, Cher responded: “This ain’t no dress rehearsal,” saying that we only have one life to live, one very short run, and then it’s over — there are no do-overs.

For therapist and blogger Damon L. Jacobs, hearing Cher’s courageous sentiment inspired him to come out of the closet as a teenager.

Today, Damon is using his experience as a therapist to help others embrace aging because the true fountain of youth is the satisfaction and inspiration you get from growing older.

“It’s a way of being warmer, more genuine, more welcoming, when you call yourself what everyone else calls you,” said Kate Coleman, the organization’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

Actress Mackenzie Phillips dropped a bombshell on the Oprah Winfrey Show yesterday claiming she and her father, the late musician John Phillips of the Momma’s and the Poppas had a drug fueled 11 year incestuous relationship. Mackenzie finally ended the affair because her father became too romantically attached. Ya think?

Although her stepmother Michelle Phillips denies the story, her own daughter and Mackenzie’s half-sister, Chyna Phillips, says it’s true- she found out about it in 1997.

Her new book “High on Arrival,” details the shocking affair with her father, her terminated pregnancy, her struggles with drugs and her brief fling with Mick Jagger.

But does the former star of One Day at a Time talk about her close friendship with Lauren Tewes, the actress who played the original Julie McCoy on the Love Boat TV show? They were both regular tabloid fodder back in the 80s when cracked-out actress on popular tv shows were king.

Today we’re talking about the affairs of the heart- the good, the bad, the ones that last and the ones that make a lasting impression.

Writer and model Byron Flitsch joins us – he writes for the Newcity and the online magazine UR Chicago about relationships from the perspective of a young gay man living in the city .

He was also one of the first podcasting super-fans, actively participating as a listener and informal contributor in many of the online shows we now know as podcasts.

The fun ended when he got outed as a gay man on one of his favorite shows, Nobody Likes Onions.

Nick sold his blackberry cell phone and a listener bought it and sent his gay online personal ads to be ridiculed for the world to hear.

Later he came into the national spotlight when he attempted suicide and micro-blogged about it on Twitter. He got a lot of sympathy from his friends, family and an in-depth article about the experience in the New York Times.

Today Nick is looking great and living a healthy, happy life as an openly gay man in San Francisco.

Listen as we talk with Nick about cyber-bullying, guilt over what turns us on and the future of podcasts and online communities.

Ernest Borgine, star of such classics as The Poseidon Adventure and Marty credited the secret to his longevity to masturbating. The 91 year old actor told Fox and Friends that he likes to release the pressure in hushed tones but it was picked up by his mic. Love that Ernest-ness!

The Internet and television is all a buzz about what’s on US Olympic champion Michael Phelps’ iPod. He seems to never be with out it in photos these days. Could he be listening to Feast of Fools? I don’t know but the idea of him spending some time listening to Tracy’s sexy stories, or Sal-E take on the nightlife, or even Amanda’s sci fi geek tangents makes me giddy.

Finally a president you would want to see shirtless! Photos of Barack Obama playing in the surf in Hawaii are making the rounds. Maybe Obama took a page from former Russian president Vladimir Putin and decided to sex up his image by appearing shirtless. We We hope and pray that McCain doesn’t do the same.

My niece Victoria asked me why adults drink to celebrate things. I told her it’s because being intoxicated gives us a feeling of euphoria, it helps us be less self conscious and it breaks down barriers to those around us. We drink because we want to be happy and social.

But I also warned her that drinking to excess is akin to poisoning yourself. Above all, be careful and be responsible. When you drink alcohol faster than your body can absorb it, you get intoxicated and a hangover occurs. Byproducts of alcohol in your bloodstream, dehydration, loss of sleep, low blood sugar and headaches are all symptoms to guarantee you’re going to be miserable the next day.

Watch out for those hangovers!

Here are some quick tips on making sure you’re going to have a Happy New Year, or at least one that’s not so miserable:

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR DRINKS
Because it’s easy to lose track over how many drinks you’ve had after your second drink, mark an “X” on the back of your hand with a Sharpie to remind yourself and others how many drinks you’ve had. Know your limits! When you have your limited X’s, stop. I got this great idea from my sister Talia. I’m limiting myself to three.

PRE-HYDRATE
Order a glass of water with every cocktail, wine or beer. You’ll still get tipsy but you won’t suffer as much from the dehydration you get from drinking booze.

GO CLEAR
Studies show that clear alcoholic beverages like vodka have less of the impurities that cause hangovers than brown ones such as whiskery, scotch, dark rum, red wine or beer. Although, some people claim that they can drink as much vodka as they like and not be hungover, this simply can not be. You will get a hangover if you drink too much. If you hear your friend say “I can drink a whole bottle of Grey Goose and not be hungover,” you can confidently call them delusional and self-destructive. Still for some, booze is booze and for some it doesn’t really make much of a difference.

GO EASY ON THE BUBBLY
Some studies show that carbonation, the bubbles in champagne, beer and other fizzy drinks actually speed up absorption compared to non-carbonated wine. One glass of Champagne at midnight really may be enough.

Okay, so still got hung over the next day, what’s the best way to heal as soon as possible?

RE-HYDRATE
Drink Gatorade, water or anything that will help with the dehydration caused by drinking the night before. Got an upset stomach? Bland chicken soup will help soothe your bowels.

EAT FRESH FRUIT BEFORE AND AFTER
Watermelon, papaya, mango, cantaloupe all have vital nutrients and sugars that help the body heal. Even having some when you come home that night will do wonders to help you heal the next day.

COMFORT FROM COMFORT FOOD
Mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and meat-loaf all share in common they are starchy, greasy and helpful in balancing out your body. BUT! If your stomach is irritated then avoid these heavy foods and simply eat shaved ice, pureed apples and chicken soup.

MILK THISTLE AND CHARCOAL TABLETS
Okay, they wont help you feel less of a hangover, but studies show that taking Milk Thistle MAY protect your liver from damage from alcohol, which is a big MAYBE. The best way to prevent it altogether is not to abuse your liver in the first place. A lot of these “hangover pills’ active ingredient is activated charcoal. Activated charcoal binds to everything in your stomach (both good and bad) and helps your body get rid of it. Some say it works, others say it just a placebo. If you do take it, make sure you take these supplements with plenty of water and don’t be alarmed the next day, charcoal will make your stool look black or green.

AVOID DRINKING ALTOGETHER
Why not try it once and see how it feels? You can celebrate and join in on the fun by drinking a caffeinated beverage or just bring some fancy iced teas along for the party. You’ll thank yourself when you see everyone else miserable the next day and you’ll feel and look fabulous that week! Either way, have a wonderful 2008.

GIVING A COMPLIMENT

• Think of it as a gift from your heart.
• Be sincere in your opinion.

Steps to take:
1- Find a specific quality you admire in the other person
2- Back it up with the reason WHY you think so.
3- Follow up with a question.
4- Listen.

• Don’t compare them to others in a positive or negative way. “You’re just like this other person.”
• Be sincere by being confident in your opinion.
• Ask for nothing in return. Don’t give a compliment if what you really want something back from it (like a favor) Ask for that instead.

RECEIVING A COMPLIMENT

1- Thank them, then stop. Don’t let anything negative come out of your mouth.
2- Think about the compliment.
3- Share with them how the compliment makes you feel.

• Do not dismiss their opinion. Many of us have been conditioned to dismiss compliments.
• Don’t transfer the credit. This is your chance to receive love.
• If you want to share credit, do so only after the feelings have been acknowledged.

A compliment is a great opportunity to form a closer bond between people and raise people’s confidence in themselves.

Here’s my attempt to pay our audience a no-strings-attached compliment:
