If you take the letters G-O-D and re-arrange them backwards, they spell out F-O-F.
Poor Marc! He looks so sad in this photo. In October 2004 we celebrated our friend David Andora’s Halloween-themed birthday party by dressing up as vintage Star Trek characters- Andorians.
Andorians are some fiesty blue antennaed aliens from the planet Andora who have a reputation for their short tempers and disdain of anything Vulcan.
I thought “It’s David Andora’s birthday! Let’s dress up as Andorians!” Did anyone get it? David did, but nobody else got it.
Needless to say, Marc was MISERABLE. The harsh blue makeup was all over his skin, the hard antennas dug into his scalp and a platinum blond wig got in his eyes and mouth.
Being a drag queen myself for over a decade I was WAY used to spending hours wearing uncomfortable costume for the sake of looking freaky and fabulous, but Marc wasn’t having any of it.
To top it off, when we got to the club where the party was being held, we were told to wait outside for an hour (in the cold fall weather) because the venue wasn’t yet open to the public. Not wanting to go home, we decided to kill time by going to the local “OTB,” thats Off Track Betting, to have a beer or two.
My good friend Jason Smith came along, and took some great photos of me at the fancy OTB men’s bathroom. The things you do for art and science fiction!
Today we take a walk down memory lane with the former musical director of the live version of the Feast of Fools, Taylor E Ross. Taylor for many years has worked with dozens of drag queen performers developing music for them. We tried to ask him about his experiences with them, but for some reason, he can’t remember much about it. Is this just personal trauma that’s blocking his memories or is it something deeper?
Join us as we talk about the way art and theater helped bring communities together in an era before the internet, and the Pope’s strong desire to wear fur and denounce evolution. He’s even put out a new book about it. Doesn’t this guy have anything better to do with his time?

Poor Marc, He does look unhappy. He did it for love but he wasn’t happy about it.
Marc, you have certainly hit on a very interesting fruit! I checked it out online – there are many articles w. pictures and info about the ‘pitaya’, that’s also it’s name, based on the Spanish pronunciation, but the fruit has many different names. It’s the fruit of a night-blooming cactus vine! Apparently it’s very popular to grow in Baja California. Marc, you look very nice as an Andorian, but I DO understand your misery! I am very allergic to makeup and have put it on to do performances, BUT Fausto has a very nice kind of makeup that doesn’t bother at all! I hope that at least he gave you that type of makeup!
I’m listening to what you say about what the Pope says about evolution – he’s playing up to the far right, just like GWB has done. Did you know, Fausto, that you and the Pope have the same birthday?
So mom, are you linking the comments now with the icons?
Hey Cliff, dressing up as Andorians was in part Marc’s idea!
Wasn’t this the same party in which Fausto and Marc both *ahem* tried to cheer each other up at the same time in a *ahem* rather effective way?
The event in question is even supposed to be immortalized in a photograph that is supposedly out there on the internet, and which has a title involving the word “holodeck,” but which has evaded ALL of my search efforts to date.
Would this be the same party?
If so, the picture of Marc and Fausto must be “pre-event.”
Sorry- wrong party and I was so miserable. I hate devery minute of it and that is the last time I’ll let him play dress up with me on Halloween.
Same costumes, different party.
This photo was taken about four years after the fact. The only people I know of that are in possesion of the infamous photos are Jo-Jo and George Takei. (true!)
Yeah, I remember George Takei requesting it during your interview. That naughty man! LOL
oh Link Pinks is missing a link in his train of thought, he did smoke too much of that grass.
you guys don’t look good at all in that picture, I don’t know why, but you remind me of that thing people drink on the home planet of Luke Skywalker.
any way, good show!
Greetings, you mentioned internet rudeness in this show…
The “rudeness” of the internet can be attributed to “the greater internet fuckwad theory”: Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total Fuckwad.
As described from Penny Arcade Here: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19
Cheers.
Doesn’t sound like Marc was as impressed with me as Fausto.
“Taylor, be sure to say he’s sexy when his picture loads.” ahem Now I got a complex.
Ron Athey is alive and well. I just received an invite to a show in London, which I’ll fwd’ you guys. The performance in question you guys mentioned was the human printing press. He made prints on rice paper from stencils excised into his skin, these were then pinned on a clothesline and pulled out over/above the audience. It was after he’d done the show in SF and repeated it in LA that the media reported people hurling chairs out of their way to escape the toxic (HIV+) prints. Go figure.
I voted for Joan Jett Black for president of the U.S. in 1996! My polling station was the Jewish Theological Seminary on the corner of Broadway and West 122 Street, in Manhattan. I was pissed off at Bill Clinton for the whole “don’t ask, don’t tell thing” and thought a black drag queen president sounded mighty fine! Oh well. Too bad she lost.
Holly Hughes, one of the NEA 4 performers you talked about on the show today, is my colleague here at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She’s great!
