Victoria’s Secret executives made a public statement last Friday saying their image has become “too sexy for their own good.”
The San Francisco based chain of women’s underwear, known for their erotic catalogs marketed towards men is now saying their aggressive approach may be backfiring, claiming sales have dropped as a result of women becoming alienated by their “too sexy” marketing image. You know you’re in trouble when you start quoting “Right Said Fred” in your press conferences.
What are they really talking about here? Is it possible to be too desirable? Or are they just feeling pangs of guilt over exploiting women’s bodies for male (and female) pleasure?
I don’t think a 2-5% drop in sales is anything to get alarmed about. My guess is they probably have a new marketing person in charge who wants to make their mark on the company and wants to take it in a new direction.
Still, I can see the public relations train wreck coming a mile away. If they state they are going to “de-sex” their image and start using big bottomed gals as models, you can bet they will catch a lot of heat from doing so.
If they choose new models based on age, race, body type and say this is not as sexy as before, you can bet they are going to have everyone turning away from their merchandise in disgust. Nobody wants to be the “unsexy” spokesmodel.
My guess is they are just trying to get media types like us to mention them on their programs to get a free plug from the “scandal” of being “too sexy.”
It remains to be seen how the pink lacy boutique will be “de-sexying” their image but I can only hope it involves something really offensive. I love a good backlash.

I think a “Terminator” doomsday scenario is highly unlikely, because if computers truly became intelligent, they would certainly realize that not only a win-win situation with humans would be in everybody’s best interest, they would see themselves as our children, and us as theirs.
Pacemakers, hip replacements and breast implants are just the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. As technology becomes more a part of us, we become more a part of it. The robots from the future will be more like a fluid C3-PO (from the film Star Wars) than a clunky Cylon (from the television series Battlestar Galatica.)
Say hello to the iCub. A little robot that they are studying in order to understand how the little bugger learns. How long before the little cub grows up to be a big bear?
