A deep look at Madonna

We had a blast talking all things Madonna with Melissa in September 2009 that we thought might enjoy hearing it again-

For almost three decades, Madonna has captured the imagination of the public by identifying where we needed to be pushed and ooh ooh, taking us there like a prayer.

Whether you’re crazy for her or annoyed by her expressing herself, you can’t deny the impact this beautiful stranger has had on all of us.

Today we dedicate the first part of our show to Madonna- the woman, the iconoclast, the musician.

Campy musician Melissa Young talks about gay divas on Feast of FunCabaret singer and Madonna expert Melissa Young joins us before she sets off on her own “Lucky Star” tour- a one woman show dedicated to the life and music of Madonna.

Madonna’s new video for her song “Celebration” does it right, featuring her die-hard fans videotaped at her concerts dancing to the beat. But the big highlight is the pop diva’s baby girl, Lourdes, all grown up and wearing the wedding dress big momma wore in her 80s video “Like a Virgin.”

Plus, Madonna’s gay brother Christopher Ciconne insults her latest hairstyle on TV- is he keeping it real or is he just really jealous?

Also in the news-

Terrible Patrick Swayze, Kanye West joke that’s involves Michael Jackson that’s making the rounds online

The touching and colorful promise to a dead solider.

True Blood Hunk for gay marriage.

Hollywood gay gossip from the 1950s.[via]

Nicole Kidman set to play a transsexual artist.

And we mourn the loss of musician Mary Travers and comedian Henry Gibson.

FYI Melissa Young, Shep Pettibone was the remixer to:
Into the Groove originally released in 1985, but remixed in 1987 from You Can Dance
    Causing a Commotion (1987)
    Spotlight from You Can Dance
    Like a Prayer (1989)
    Express Yourself (1989)
    Keep it Together (1990)
    Vogue (1990)
    Justify My Love (1990)
This Used to Be my Playground (1992)
    Erotica (1992)
    Deeper and Deeper (1992)
    Bad Girl (1993)
    Fever (1993)
    Rain (1993)
And the songs produced for Erotica are:
Erotica, Bye Bye Baby, Deeper and Deeper, Bad Girl, Thief of Hearts, Words, Rain, Why’s It So Hard, In This Life and Did You Do It?
And unreleashed songs: You Are The One, Shame & Jitterbug from Erotica sessions; Goodbye To Innocence, Something’s Coming Over Me, I Will Always Have You, Bring It, Goodtime and Tongue Tied from Bedtime Stories.
It were Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray and Prince who produced Like a Prayer along with Madonna.

The order of the US singles from 82′ – 92′ were Everybody, Burning Up/Physical Attraction, Holiday, Borderline and Lucky Star, Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Crazy For You, Angel/Into the Groove, Dress You Up, Gambler, Live To Tell, Papa Don’t Preach, True Blue, Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita, Who’s That Girl, Causing A Commotion, Look Of Love- Non US single, Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Oh Father, Keep It Together, Dear Jessie-Non US single, Vogue, Justify My Love, Rescue Me, This is Used to my Playground, Erotica, Deeper and Deeper. But her first top 10 hit is Borderline and her first #1 hit is Like a Virgin.

In my interpretation of Express Yourself, Madonna rebels against her master/husband w/ the bald head & monocle that oversees the man powered factory by having her black “pussy” cat do the walking to seduce her man of dreams who is played by the model Cameron and in turn causes a riot. The scene where Madonna dances in a man’s suit and monocle was a fantasy dreamt up by Cameron’s character.

The reason people turned on her after Erotica, Sex and Body of Evidence because the liberals and the conservatives thought she went too far in pushing the envelope and being overexposed
I happen to like the other artistic folk pop rock songs from American Life, but I do agree the rap in the title track is cheesy. But hey, it’s perfect because it’s pop.

Michael Jackson also stole the “moonwalk” from the b boys from the street just like Madonna took vogueing from the underground ball rooms and clubs.

Madonna did bring gay culture visibility from Open Your Heart video, Express Yourself video & performances, Vogue, Blond Ambition, Truth or Dare, Sex, Erotica, Girlie Show, Next Best Thing and Miss American Pie video.
I agree that Olivia Newton John’s Let’s Get Physical video does not count when expressing a homoerotic view from the female singer because her male models were gay.

It’s “quicker than a ray of light” not “with a little ray of light”. Just joshing.

The vocalizer effect were done for Madonna’s Music album’s Nobody’s Perfect, Don’t Tell Me and Paradise Is Not For Me.

Madonna’s mother died when Madonna was 5 years old, not 6.

The order of the family siblings are Anthony, Martin, Madonna, Paula, Christopher, Melanie, half sis & bro: Jennifer and Mario.

There is no one sitting the king of pop’s throne, but the closest contenders are Justin Timberlake and Usher.

  2. David says:

Also in the Like a Prayer video Madonna & the “black Jesus” who is supposed to be the St. Martin de Porres breaking another taboo by kissing inside the church on a pew. I think this time she was fantasizing about kissing the wrong accused, imprisoned guy, whose actor plays the “black Jesus”.

I love and enjoy your show.
