Sadly, Rustin is largely ignored in the history of equality in this country because of his sexuality, so today we also remember the importance of his influence on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his desire for non-violent protest.

The Steve – Ricky stuff is all part of a bit. It’s been going on for years between the two. Yes Ricky makes a lot of money off Steve from US proceeds of the Office but Ricky himself left the Brit version of the show before it stopped airing. The bit has been going on for years. A few years ago Ricky won an Emmy and Steve picked it up for him. The bit continued the next year when Ricky was a host or a presenter and he “shamed” Steve in the audience for keeping the emmy for himself and never passing it along to him. Maybe a lot of the humor is too subtle for people to realize it as such.
I always thought it was interesting that due in part to the sexism and homophobia of the Civil Rights and Free Speech movements we ended up getting the Gay Rights and Women’s Right’s movements. (Because gays were forced to remain closeted or go like Bayard or women were relegated to the office work.) Annnyway. Great to hear about Bayard Rustin. I had not heard of him prior to this podcast.
Also- I’ve blown through 6 seasons of “The Office” recently and while it’s pretty good and I love Steve’s character, I am excited to see him leave because I want the character to reunite with his girlfriend and the show to reinvent itself a bit. Today they announced Ricky Gervais will be revising his character from the UK Office for a cameo in one of Steve’s last episode. I’d love to see him replace Steve actually.
I wasn’t a fan of that Simpsons episode though. It felt a little dated in terms of the kind of gay humor (especially compared to when they outed Patty or the classic one where Homer worries Bart is gay) and it was also a little disjointed with the plot involving Principle Skinner.
I think The Office will survive okay without Steve Carell. It’s changed over the years from a group of characters who are at the mercy of their disastrously un-self-aware boss to an ensemble cast where everyone plays a role in providing colour, commentary and conflict. Whether Carell’s career will suffer without the office, I don’t know—Evan Almighty was a flop, but I liked Date Night and Dinner for Schmucks. Choose wisely, Steve!
Additionally, here’s the song I thought of when Fausto spoke about the fight for everyone to have a voice and why fighting for somebody else’s rights is fighting for one’s own. Love it so much.
Okay, I don’t think that worked. Trying one more time!
