The recent landmark victory for Marriage Equality in the State of New York was a close call. One key Republican, Senator Mark Grisanti changed his vote at the last moment in favor of equality because one woman, Kitty Lambert and her friends at the organization OUTspoken for Equality persuaded him to do so.
New York wedding bells will ring ahead of schedule!

Thank you Kitty!! Your podcast was wonderful and your tenacity speaks volumes about how grassroots movements can be a catalyst for change. You are truly an inspiration and hope others emulate your spirit and make same-sex marriage the law of the land. Congratulations to you and Cheryle!
I’m so happy to help out and provide books to your listeners who donate $103! Head on over to the donate page right now and get yours!
A little correction: I wish Northwest Press could take credit giving the world Eric Shanower and Jim McCann’s Eisner-winning works, but that thanks should go to publishers Marvel and Archaia, respectively. But those two fine gents are part of the broader LGBT comics community like Northwest Press is, and we were all guests of Prism Comics at its gigantic queer comics booth at Comic-Con this past week. In that sense, *we* did win big last week!
Hey Marc and Fausto,
I have been listening for about 5 years now.
I don’t think I have missed a show yet.
I recently left a long term relationship and your podcasts are providing me with friendly comfort.
I’m a student from Australia so I don’t have much to donate but I just bought my first T shirt!
Good luck with your fund raising!
Adore you both,
Georgie.
Kitty was such a delight! Thank you for your work on marriage equality!
ahhh I am such a lazy-ass and never comment on the shows even tho I listen to everyone of em, but this was a really great show! Kitty was great loved her sass and her passion for what she does. Definitely shed light on the hardships the LGBT community is facing when it comes to not having marriage rights. I mean that story of the senior woman who lost her partner, broke my heart, it is just so infuriating.
This summer I have been working at a Print/paper shop that prints custom cards, and a lot of the work they get is wedding invitations, and other wedding stuff, I’ve also had to look up wedding venues and wedding counselors on the web for other things, and I can’t help but feel a little bitter by all of it thinking, “you hetero people don’t know how easy you have it with your ability to marry, while gay couples who have been together for YEARS in a committed relationship can’t get married and have all the rights you hetero people have.”
but I am always bitter and pessimistic about everything U_U
Great show. I feel all fired up to do something political now. I loved the discussion of how grassroots work can be the best starting place to change. Also a great reminder kind of show for those getting political – to stay calm, think outside of the box, use reason, and still be a firebrand. I totally second her dissatisfaction with civil unions.
Loved the humor and was moved by her story of the elderly couple.
The entire time I was also thinking: She needs to meet Andy Thayer. haha
If you’re reading: Thanks for your hard work and passion, Kitty!
As a very good friend of Kitty’s and the WNY (Buffalo-Rochester) HRC Field Organizer for Marriage Equality, I have to point out a glaring error in this article. The Human Rights Campaign *NEVER* told Kitty to “not to bother trying to persuade the senator (Grisanti).” In fact, I believe you may have confused Empire State Pride Agenda (ESPA) with the Human Rights Campaign.
As Kitty would eloquently point out, the local WNY HRC staff was an important force which was essential in convincing Senator Grisanti. Local WNY HRC staff was instrumental in molding strategy in “flipping” Senator Grisanti. In fact, it was the local WNY HRC staff that provided legal citations regarding the failure of civil unions in New Jersey that Senator Grisanti directly mentioned in his eloquent speech on the floor of the NYS Senate regarding why he supported marriage equality. Consequently, it’s outrageous to state that HRC EVER argued Senator Grisanti was a “lost cause.”
However, sadly, ESPA has always been disinterested with anything associated with Buffalo, NY.
Out of respect for history (and out of respect of a good friend of Kitty’s), I do hope you make the appropriate correction. Many thanks in advance!!
Best.
JB
It what she said on the show. If she would like to clarify, then she may do so.
This was one of the best and most moving interviews I have heard on the show. What a dynamic guest and you showed your interviewing skills with this one. I was almost in tears from the feeling of freedom and relief but also from anger at the religious right and NOM and the harm that they do to us to keep the cash coming in. I already knew all of this but you tied it all together so well.
