During the height of the Cold War, Americans responded to the threat of communism in developing nations by forming the Peace Corps.
Today we are talking to Peace Corps volunteer Dave Massey about his extraordinary experience living in Africa and Asia for 4 years! Why did a young gay man enlist in the Peace Corps to teach English to people in developing countries.

wow, couldnt believe im the first one here
and i got mentioned in the show ! About the sensitivity issues here in China, about 3 months ago here in Chongqing , i know one of the Peace Corps volunteers got banned from China for good because he only mentioned Liu Xiaobo for once in class, he didnt even say anything else but asked the students do they know about that guy , apparently some little bird reported on him … i know it’s ridiculous but .. yeah . the Communism is gonna fail anyway
thx for the great show, guys !
Thanks for listening! We think David is simply fabulous.
Hey Lecter,
I hope all is well and glad you’re enjoying the show.
Love the show today. I have always wanted to go to peace corp but could not. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It was quite an experience I would think to have to sit out in the rain vomiting and diarrhea
About living in a communist country, I have 16 years of experiences. The sad things are that when you live in that environment, you don’t even notice and see it anymore until you got out of it. It was kind of natural for me back the not to talk about certain stuffs.
Anyway, my last word is how can you be that hot and not have sex for that long. Just saying:)
Hey,
. Thank you again for the comment. Keep listening.
Thanks for listening. I must say, I didn’t join PC for the sex
Dave
Just a quick note to say I really enjoyed the show and that I voted today for the PODCAST award nominations. In the comment section I wrote that I listen to the show because the hosts are so damn caliente – who gives a shit about the programming. Just joshing… Best of luck, hope you all win.
Very interesting show, particular the part about China was interesting for me as I was together with a guy from Shanghai who studied in Germany for almost 3 years. Visited with him China, particular Shanghai several times and I found the gay bars were fun. But I think general in East-Asia it is still difficult for gay guys as they often face a lot of pressure from their family to marry.
I also think that censorship is getting worse in China as the goverment knows they are in deep trouble, the economy of China is basically where the Japanese was in the 1989, the largest part of it are investments mainly financed by debt. The high currency reserves are another sign of huge imblanaces within the ecnomy. If you compare it with other countries, only the US in 1929 and Japan in 1989 had such high currency reserves as share of GDP and we all know how that ended.
Love you Dave! Thanks for representing us volunteers so well! Wish we were dancing to Lady Gaga in Chengdu together again!
Dave is a pretty awesome guy.
