About half of Americans reject evolution, the scientific idea that explains how all life on earth came to be. And the other half doesn’t really get it either, thinking that nature is a cruel bully that delivers wedgies of oblivion to the weak and meek.

Does anyone really get what evolution is all about? Today comedian Brian Sweeney joins us to take a look at common misconceptions homo sapiens have about evolution, and all the crazy ways it’s been portrayed in popular culture.

Boskop Man is a myth. This was not some ancient super human. This was most likely an anomalous mutation of a modern human (think of proteus syndrome or marfan syndrome), but also could have been a subset of modern humans. It has been confirmed this specimen was a modern human. Until other specimens are found, it can only be considered an anomaly and no conclusions can be drawn, certainly nothing as outlandish as a new super-intelligent species. Remember that brain size does not predict intelligence alone. Brain complexity is the biggest predictor of intelligence. Neanderthal men had as high if not higher cranial capacity than modern humans, yet modern humans with their more complex brains and higher intelligence displaced them and ultimately eradicated them.
