If your happiness relies on what you see on TV, you’re going to be miserable, so why not look to other forms of culture for inspiration. Maybe that’s why young people are turning to the internet for entertainment.

Today we’re joined by writer Shawn Binder, who feels the way gay men are portrayed in the media makes the younglings feel like they are making a terrible, terrible mistake in their lives by being gay.

  1. Than says:

There really are only two portrayals of gay men in media. There’s the neutered suburban gay couple who are indistinguishable from suburban straight couples except that they are what middle-America thinks ‘stylish’ is. And, there’s the Brian Kinney-esque shallow, slutty drug-addicted WeHo faggot. Clearly, those types do exist, but there is a spectrum in between that you will never see in media. Like you two, there are monogamish gay couples in middle-America who only use drugs recreationally.

Fausto’s point about American movies made for a global ESA audience is spot on. I was literally last night having a conversation with a Filipina. She said she hated Interstellar. She said she didn’t get it because English is her second language.

  2. “Why are gay men so afraid of themselves?” is cool, but I really prefer Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore’s Why Are Faggots So Afraid of Faggots?: Flaming Challenges to Masculinity, Objectification, and the Desire to Conform (2012). Please have Mattilda on your show! Much more radical. See more info here: http://www.mattildabernsteinsycamore.com/faggotsafraid.html
