Lotería is a Mexican game similar to Bingo, but instead of ping pong balls they use images on a deck of cards. Hipsters in the late 80s early 90s loved these designs and for a time you could find them represented everywhere, from t-shirts to TV shows like Pee Wee’s Playhouse.

I’m sure coming out for a trams person full time is a cause for celebration, but this self portrait just makes me think of Alien monsters popping out of people’s bodies.

Did you know two of the characters in the original alien movie were written into the script as trans? They changed the script after the actors managers protested.

The Outcast, by FatYogi

Artists Linda Regula and Paul Richmond are launching an online project dedicated to giving the victims of bullying a voice through the arts. The You Will Rise Project (youwillriseproject.com) will provide a multimedia showcase for drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos, poetry, and other creative expressions by people of all ages, representing their experiences with bullies.

Regula and Richmond believe hurtful experiences can become inspiration for powerful works of art that can be both healing for the artist and inspiring for viewers. “Even when bullies try to take it away, you still have a voice,” says Richmond. “Our goal with the You Will Rise Project is to create a space for those voices to be heard.”

Linda and Paul were both bullied as kids, and have channeled those experiences into their own art. They first met in 1984 when Paul (who was four years old at the time) began taking art lessons from Linda. An instant bond was formed – one that has lasted twenty seven years. Not only did she teach Paul how to paint, she also taught him how to use his art to express what he was feeling and experiencing, just as she did in her own work.

Linda attributes her experience of being bullied to the fact that she was “poor, skinny, motherless, and very shy.” Paul was bullied because he is gay. They both believe that these hardships served as powerful motivation to make choices that ultimately enriched their lives — and their art.

“The first picture I remember drawing was a colorful phoenix rising from ashes,” Regula explains. “My fourth-grade teacher chose it to display in her ‘honor place,’ but while she was out of the room, a bully grabbed it, ripped it up, and threw it into the air like confetti. I don’t remember drawing again until adulthood, so I know how deeply being bullied can affect a child, especially when one’s home life is also horrendous.”

The logo for the You Will Rise Project is a colorful phoenix painted by Regula.

People of all ages are encouraged to submit work to the project. Submission guidelines can be found on the website, and all levels of artistic experience are welcome. Those wishing to remain anonymous can do so.

“This is such an exciting project because it empowers people to speak up about what they’re experiencing,” says Richmond. “It’s powerful because it’s not about us as adults telling them what to do. We’re simply giving them a space to create and share their own stories.”

The painting “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” by Pablo Picasso that sold last year for $106.5 million at Christie’s in New York is on display in London for the first time in 60 years.

It is the most expensive painting sold at public auction but it’s reported that Ronald S.Lauder privately purchased a portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Klimt for $135 million in 2006.

The controversy is heating up over the Smithsonian including and then removing a video containing religious and gay imagery from the exhibition “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture” which explores how sexual orientation and gender identity have shaped American art.

In this video Congressman Jack Kingston seems upset that the exhibit also includes a photo of Ellen Degeneres “grabbing her own breasts.” Perhaps he wanted to see Ellen grab someone else’s breasts.

The video, “A Fire in My Belly” by David Wojnarowicz is an edited version of a thirty minute video he created in 1987. It is described as “a compilation of footage largely shot in Mexico, weaving together numerous images of loss, pain, and death into a metaphor for the AIDS epidemic; it concludes in a picture of the world aflame.”

The artist, David Wojnarowicz died from AIDS-related illness in 1992.

Next to the Mona Lisa, American Gothic is one of the most reproduced and parodied paintings of all time.

The dour portrait of a Midwestern farmer holding a pitchfork with a woman in front of an American Gothic style house is highly celebrated for its intensity and by many conservatives as a Nationalist symbol for America and the virtue of marriage.

In 2002 anti-gay groups wanted to tie the popularity of the painting to their efforts against marriage equality by naming the Federal Marriage Amendment “the American Gothic Amendment” even though Grant Wood, the artist who created the work was gay.

Today we’re joined by art historian R. Tripp Evans whose bold new book on the artist- Grant Wood: A Life” chronicles the full rich gay life behind this American painter.

Listen as we talk with R. Tripp Evans about Grant Wood’s journey as an artist, the homoerotic imagery in his work, how his sister erased his gay sexuality after his death, and the homophobic review of Tripp’s book by the New York Times.

You’re probably familiar with American Gothic, Grant Wood’s masterpiece depicting a serious farmer standing beside a younger woman in front of a country house and you may have even wondered what the relationship is between the strange couple- husband and wife or father and daughter. But did you know that the artist that painted it was gay?

Here’s a gallery of paintings by the artist Grant Wood to accompany our interview with R. Tripp Evans about his book on the artist- Grant Wood: A Life.

Throughout his life, Grant Wood produced many homoerotic paintings that included nude bathers and men portrayed as women. Some of his paintings have cheeky gay puns like “Sultry Night” in reference to the model whose last name was “Knight” and “Adolescence” a sort of self-portrait that features the artist as a chicken, an old Polari slang for a young gay man, stuck between two hens- his mother and sister.

One of his works, “Arnold Comes of Age” is featured in the exhibition “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture” which explores how sexual orientation and gender identity have shaped American art at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

We think this landmark exhibition looking at the gay legacy in art is worth checking out.
