Gus Van Sant’s new biographic film MILK brings forth a chilling timeliness with parallels to the anti-gay measures passed in the last election.

Have we come a long way baby, or have we only just begun?

On today’s show we have the real-life Cleve Jones, Harvey Milk’s protegee and friend portrayed by the hunky actor Emile Hirsch in the film. Since the 1970s, he has been working tirelessly for gay rights and union organization.

On the anniversary of the assassination of Harvey Milk, Cleve conceived the idea for the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the world’s largest community arts project and memorial to the lives of over 85,000 Americans killed by AIDS.

Cleve shares his experience with the film and his thoughts on boycotts and the fight against proposition 8. Cleve is asking for the gay community to boycott Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego because the owner of the hotel gave $125,000 to Yes on Prop 8 campaign. Puerto Rico bars discrimination against same sex couples, for now, but will it last? Governor-elect Luis Fortuño, says he may revoke it if the commonwealth can’t pay for it. I wonder if San Juan be the gay marriage capital of the Caribbean.

Although the African American religious vote made a small but significant difference in passing this ordinance, many people are pitting gay rights advocates against the black church.

Our gay pride shouldn’t be something we celebrate one month out of the year. We need to fight for equality! There’s no bigger turn on than a passion for justice.

As fortunate as we are to have an intelligent, progressive and inclusive leader, and a democratic house and senate, many people in this country are disappointed that California’s Proposition 8 may have passed, taking away same-sex couples right to marry.

How did this tragedy happen? After all, California solidly voted for Barack Obama, who was against the proposition in the first place.

On today’s show San Francisco resident Curtis Jensen talks about the mood of the city upon learning the news, and pondering how this defeat will affect the struggle for equality.

We all are a bit down about Prop 8 and we talk about some steps you can do to heal, learn and grow from this painful loss and how you can get back on your feet and keep on fighting the good fight.

Another unfortunate crush to the American dream is the failure to pass Proposition R, which was endorsed by our lovely Peaches Christ. The proposition sought to rename a sewage plant after President George W. Bush. Peaches was thrilled that 65,0000 people voted for it and she loved using the political process to make a statement.

Marc and I decided to get into the thick of it, celebrating the victory, surrounded by over a million supporters in Grant Park in downtown Chicago. History tends to draw a big crowd.

A huge and diverse crowd gathered to celebrate the victory and to hear the President-Elect drive home his message in his optimistic catchphrase “yes we can.”

Has “yes we can” replaced “oh no she didn’t?”

Marc described the event as a real-life fairy tale come true, and Senator John McCain was very gracious in his defeat. It almost felt like the whole event was coordinated. Did Barack Obama and John McCain coordinate their acceptance speeches or politics as usual?
