Despite reports of sabotaged floats, rest assured all was well in Whoville on Pride Day! We gathered, we celebrated and we knew the true reason of pride.

The parade itself was maybe as long, and slightly more drawn out than usual but it was a huge triumph. Hot shirtless men abounded by the scores- both straight and straight friendly.

People in the Chicago are super excited about the progress we’ve made with civil unions in Illinois and the recent New York marriage laws. Hooray!

Here I am trying to heal the arm of a guy who claims to have been bitten by a Black Widow Spider in Cape Giradeau, MO. Watch out for the gay bars there.

All across the country, Pride is in full swing with events celebrating LGBT folks and the 1969 Stonewall riots that galvanized the modern gay rights movement.

Although Pride Parades have their roots in political action, today they have become a wildly colorful hootenanny, a delicious rainbow colored version of Mardi-Gras.

Some think it’s tragic, we think it’s fabulous. Pride is about celebrating who you are, even if that means staying at home sipping iced tea with your twin chihuahuas Christina and Christopher.

This is the first Gay Pride in Mumbai since decriminalization and people are out, proud and have a fantastic sense of humor.

All across the world, Pride parades and celebrations reach their peak during the month of June, as millions gather to celebrate gay, trans, lesbian and bisexual culture.

But there is trouble under the rainbow- many people feel the celebrations wash over the ongoing problems of prejudice and that these rowdy festivals actually hurt our cause. Does acting like Snookie from Jersey Shore hurt us in the end?

Queer theorist superstar Judith Butler shocked the gays when she appeared at Berlin Pride to accept an award, but then refused to accept it and criticized the event as being too commercial and ignoring the problems of racism and discrimination.

Carrying a 20 metre long rainbow flag and placards in Russian and English calling for “Rights for gays”, the protesters chanted “No homophobia” and “Russia without homophobes.”

“LGBT activists from Moscow, St Petersburg and Minsk staged today the first-ever successful Gay Pride in Moscow, despite the [government] ban,” said Nikolai Alekseev, principal organizer for Moscow Pride. “Though the March was short – it happened. All the Russian media reported that for the first time in five years, the gay parade took place in Moscow without being arrested by the police and assaulted by protesters.”

“The guerrilla-style hit-and-run Moscow Gay Pride march was over before the police arrived. When they turned up, officers scurried around aimlessly, searching for protesters to arrest. All escaped the police dragnet,” said British gay human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who joined today’s parade to support the Russian gay campaigners.

“All morning the Gay Pride organisers fed the police a steady stream of false information, via blogs and websites, concerning the location of the parade… As a result, the police put the whole area in total lockdown, closing nearby streets and metro stations, in bid to prevent protesters assembling there.”

“Through clever organizing and disciplined execution of their plan, Russian lesbian and gay organizers were able to outwit the vastly superior resources of the Russian state,” said Andy Thayer of Chicago’s Gay Liberation Network. “Russian gay organizers defied homophobic Mayor Yury Luzhkov’s macho bluster, demonstrating great courage and determination. They showed that people can successfully organize for freedom even in very difficult circumstances. They not only set an example that LGBT people around the world can learn from, but gave hope for all Russians struggling for democracy and equal rights.”

Even though police tailed journalists in hopes that they would lead officers to the demonstrators, Russian Pride organizers were able to “embed” and get coverage from major international news agencies including the Associated Press, Agence France Presse, Reuters, TF1 (1st channel of French television), dpa (Deutsche Press Agenture), Swedish television, BFM (French television), France2 (French television), and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Many independent journalists covered the event as well. A preliminary list of links to print stories, video and photos appears below.

On the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade left the streets WIDE open to pedestrians hours after the parade ended. The thrilling street party was a fitting tribute to the riots that sparked the modern gay rights movement.
