Frank was ejected from the Civi Service in 1957 for being gay and he fought his dismissal all the way up to the Supreme Court. He didn’t win that case but his fervor helped create the modern day gay rights movement. When you look back at early activism in the 50s and 60s, he was there protesting outside of the White House in a suit and tie. He continued his activism until his death.

The genesis of “Gay is Good”

This is a wonderful anecdote about how Frank came up with the phrase “Gay is Good.” It was passed on to me by a Bob Witeck, whose husband, Bob Connelly, an adjunct professor at American University, invited Frank to speak to his undergrads about LGBT civil rights issues and do a Q&A.

Professor Bob Connelly: Is there one thing you’ve done that stands above all others, as what you are most proud of?

Dr. Franklin Kameny: Well, yes. The one thing I’ve said, if I want to be remembered for nothing else, it’s back in July, 1968 I coined the slogan “Gay Is Good.”

And that really, it sort of, it epitomizes really my entire approach to all the issues. You have to take an affirmative approach on these things. In other words, if I may expound for a moment — people tend almost automatically, since we are under attack, and we are under criticism, they tend to respond defensively and reactively. Around then, taking the next step and responding on the offensive and proactively. In other words, the tendency — we’re told that homosexuality is bad in all sorts of different ways so the response tends to be “It’s not bad.”

You have to take the next step and say, “Not really, it’s not bad. It’s good.” It’s not that same sex marriage will not damage the institution of marriage. Same sex marriage will enhance the institution of marriage. You have to consciously take the next step and move over into being affirmative and so here again, it’s not that gay is not bad, it’s that gay is affirmative and good.

That came out of, in those days — again you have to go back to the issues of that day and the rhetoric of that day — in June of 1968 I saw on television an item of Stokely Carmichael leading a group of students at a college in Salisbury Maryland, chanting, “Black Is Beautiful.” And again, same thing. It’s not that black is not ugly, or in other ways lesser. We’re going to take the next step, “Black Is Beautiful,” and I realized I had to do exactly the same thing. I tossed around words and phrases. “Homosexuality” was obviously too clinical. “Good” was sort of bland; on the other hand it covered all the possibilities. Some people had suggested to me, “Gay Is Great,” but that sounded a little bit too informal. So ultimately I came up with that. It was adopted in August at a meeting of what was then the North American Conference of Homophile Organizations as a slogan.

Meanwhile, in those days, Playboy had a separate little publication called the Playboy Forum, and they had a long article, just about that time, July, August, September, which was sort of, at best wishy-washy about the gay issue. So I wrote them a long letter — I can be verbose at times — and I included “Gay Is Good.” And to my pleased astonishment, the following February or March of 1969, they published my whole letter under their heading, “Gay Is Good.” And that sent it out to the whole public, and we’re off and running.

The European Council on Human Rights may have ruled that the Russian people have a right to hold a Pride Parade, but that didn’t stop the authorities in Moscow from banning it anyway by claiming they couldn’t protect the parade participants from the haters.

But, the march was a huge success not only at an international level, but it also drew an unprecedented amount of attention from the Russian media, which here until now largely ignored the struggle for gay rights in the land of Tchaikovsky.

Today, Andy Thayer joins us fresh from his return from Russia (with love) to share his amazing story of participating in the Pride Parade and what it was like to face down hunky but violent Russian police officers and fascists.

The People For the American Way released a report, Big Bullies: How the Religious Right is Trying to Make Schools Safe for Bullies and Dangerous for Gay Kids

Michael Keegan, President of People For the American Way says:
“The anti-anti-bullying movement sounds like a joke, but it’s frighteningly real. The Religious Right is desperately trying to protect bullies and further marginalize gay and gay-perceived kids by stopping efforts to make schools safe for every child.”

“The pro-bullying movement shows just how far the Religious Right is willing to go to stop the recognition and acceptance of gay people at every level of society, and to paint themselves as the victims of the gay rights movement. The real bullies are the adults who are willing to hurt kids in order to push a political agenda of intolerance and exclusion.”

The Right’s anti-anti-bullying effort relies on four central strategies, according to the report:

1. The Indoctrination Myth: Religious Right activists claim that anti-bullying policies will result in “homosexual indoctrination” in schools.

2. The “Special Rights” Smear: Opponents claim that recognizing and confronting the problem of anti-gay bullying amounts to granting “special rights” to LGBT kids.

3. Playing the Victim: The Religious Right has tried to turn the realities of school bullying on their head, claiming that anti-gay bullies are the real victims, and gay rights groups the real bullies.

4. Blaming the Victim: In the crudest part of the anti-anti-bullying effort, Religious Right activists are trying to blame the gay rights movement and gay kids themselves for anti-gay bullying.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s wrist must be sore. Why did they use so many pens?

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signs into law the Civil Unions Bill. For the first time in Illinois history, gay and lesbian couples will be afforded many of the same rights as their married counterparts under landmark legislation signed into law Monday.

Meeks is one of the biggest names in the race, and he’s looking to unite Chicago’s African American population behind him to pull out a win.

For gays and lesbians, however, Meeks is someone to watch very closely.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the organization that tracks and works to prevent hate and bias related crimes, Meeks is one of the “Gatekeepers,” a group of Chicago preachers seeking to erase the division between Church and State. It takes a lot to be on SPLC’s watch list–there are only a handful of official anti-gay hate groups on their list of hate groups nationwide and the Illinois Family Institute is one–for Meeks to get on that watch list should make us all very nervous he’s starting this early.

Meeks isn’t just anti-marriage. He supports stripping away even the most basic human rights for LGBT people, opposes employment protection, and has indicated if he is elected mayor, he would address existing protections for LGBT people (presumably to dismantle them) if he gets “bored.”

Yup, if he gets bored enough, he’ll keep busy by making our lives hell.

When asked recently on Fox about how he would deal with LGBT issues if mayor, Meeks said:

“Now if I were sitting around bored with nothing to do, that stuff might come up. But I expect to be so busy with schools, crime and budget problems during my first term that I wouldn’t have any time.”

Meeks’ record on LGBT rights speaks otherwise, however, as much of his evangelism has involved attacking LGBT people and demonizing our community–literally. He’ll likely move quickly to begin undoing rights gained during the Daley administration.

What do you think can be done to get Chicago’s faith leaders and African American community leaders to stand up and denounce Meeks’ hate and vitriol?

Russian gay leader vows, “Whatever the courts decide, the right to protest is guaranteed under the Russian constitution and we intend to exercise our rights.”

U.S. gay activist Andy Thayer says “this Saturday, this gay pride flag I brought from Chicago will fly on the streets of Moscow along with Russian gay pride flags, whether there is permit or not.”

MOSCOW, Russia — The fifth attempt to hold a Moscow Pride parade was launched today with a packed news conference in the Grand Ballroom at the Holiday Inn on Lesnaya Street.

Nikolai Alekseev, the principal organizer of Moscow Pride, announced at the press conference:

“The courts today rejected our appeal against the banning of three Gay Pride rallies. We asked to hold these rallies in central Moscow this Saturday 29 May. Now we go to court on Friday in a bid to overturn the Mayor’s ban on holding a Gay Pride march through Moscow on Saturday,” he said.

Organizers are not hopeful that the ban will be revoked.

“The Mayor’s reputation and authority is at stake. He has refused us for the last five years, ever since our first attempted gay parade in 2006. I hope he will change his mind but I doubt it. Mayor Luzhkov is not a great lover of democracy, human rights or gay people. Whatever the courts decide, the right to protest is guaranteed under the Russian constitution and we intend to exercise our rights,” added Mr. Alekseev.

Today’s Moscow Pride launch and press conference was attended by international delegates and speakers, who were there to support the Russian gay activists, including Volker Beck, the German Green MP; Louis-Georges Tin, founder of the International Day Against Homophobia and President of the IDAHO Committee; Andy Thayer, a U.S. gays rights activist with the Gay Liberation Network; and Peter Tatchell, coordinator of the British gay human rights group OutRage! and human rights spokesperson for the Green Party of England and Wales.

Mr. Thayer told the news conference:

“Dr. King and other civil rights heroes taught that unjust laws sometimes have to be broken in order to make civil rights progress. That is why this Saturday, this gay pride flag I brought from Chicago will fly on the streets of Moscow along with Russian gay pride flags, whether there is permit or not. This is the way that civil rights progress has always been made.”

“I would say to the leader of my government, Mr. Obama, it is very easy to speak out in favor of human rights in countries to which you are opposed. It is a far more difficult thing to speak out in favor of human rights at home, and in countries to which you are allied. Recently Mr. Obama you cut a nuclear arms deal with the Russian government. It is time now to speak out against the ban on Moscow Pride scheduled for this Saturday. Russian gays and lesbians who have been so courageously organizing for their freedom, and the freedom of all Russians, deserve no less.”

Mr. Tatchell told the news conference:

“The ban on Moscow Pride is illegal and Mayor Luzhkov is a criminal for banning it. He should be put on trial for violating the Russian constitution. The real criminals are not the organizers of Moscow Pride, but the mayor of Moscow and the judges who uphold this illegal ban.”

“President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin are colluding with this ban by failing to order it to be overturned. I call on the Russian President and Prime Minister to show leadership by publicly condemning the ban and by calling on the mayor of Moscow to lift it. They should ensure freedom of expression and the right to protest to all the citizens of Moscow and Russia, gay and straight.”

This the fifth year that Moscow authorities have banned gay pride events in the city, even though gay homosexuality was decriminalized 17 years ago.

Nikolai Alekseev, the principal organizer of Moscow Pride and past guest of Feast of Fun said, “We are ready to take all bans to the European Court of Human Rights, which this year is due to rule on the complaints lodged over the bans on the first three Moscow Gay Prides – in 2006, 2007, 2008.”

Attorney General Bill McCollum said last week that his agency did a “thorough search” to find him. He said Rekers had a Ph.D. from UCLA and experience testifying in similar cases.

Rekers did testify in Arizona in opposition to gay foster parents. But the judge there called his testimony “extremely suspect and of little, if any, assistance to the court.”

So much for a thorough search. McCollum then admitted the obvious about hiring Rekers:

“There wasn’t a whole lot of choice.”

It’s almost impossible finding a credible mental-health expert who supports a blanket ban on gay adoption. Research shows that it’s parent quality that matters, not parent sexual orientation.

You can hold him accountable for scraping the bottom of the barrel to fulfill this hateful policy.

In October of 2009 the National Equality March brought over 200,000 people from all across the land to the nation’s capitol to demand the federal government put gay rights on the top of their list.

Since then, the movement is at a crossroads- we have the people, the money, and the will, but there is a raging debate on how best to proceed.

They really don’t like you, they really really hate you.

Senator Ashburn has served in the California state legislature since 1996 and has an extensive voting history of vigorously opposing LGBT rights, including his overwhelming support of the state’s Proposition 8 which denied equal rights to LGBT citizens. Early in March 2010, Senator Ashburn was arrested for drunk driving shortly after he left a Sacramento gay bar with another man in his state-issued car. Ashburn’s arrest has sparked major controversy.

Since his arrest he has admitted he is gay, and claims his voting record reflects his constituent’s views. Ashburn says he plans to continue voting on behalf of what he sees as the majority viewpoint in his district, even if that means voting against LGBT civil rights.

In recent years, Pink Brick Award recipients have included Miss California contestant Carrie Prejean for her efforts against marriage equality, Archbishop George Niederauer for his support of Proposition 8, FOX-TV Commentator Bill O’Reilly for his sensationalist reporting on the LGBT community, former US President George W. Bush for his support of an amendment to the US Constitution that would define marriage strictly as between a man and a woman, and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for his veto of a bill that would have allowed same-sex marriage in his state. Fun folks!

SF Pride Board of Directors President Mikayla Connell concluded: “For 40 years, San Francisco Pride has educated the world about the kind of freedom that can only occur when aligning personal honesty with political action in our lives. We hope this year’s Pink Brick recipient, Senator Roy Ashburn, realizes that it’s never too late for him—or anyone else—to choose liberation and justice over shame, fear and silence.”

The perception among many activists that pro-LGBT political advances have arrived at far too slow a pace in recent years has led to a great deal of finger-pointing. Some aim at the large “Gay Inc.” national organizations. Others point to leaders of failed efforts to block same-sex marriage bans in California and Maine. Others cite America’s long history of religious activism in politics.

In response to what some perceive as a failure of effective LGBT leadership, many queer activists have called for a strategic turn toward civil disobedience and direct action-oriented organizing, borrowing a page from the history of the African American civil rights movement.

Others maintain the path to federal equality is found in lobbying and keeping faith in the community’s “fierce advocates” who hold public office. Still others find the path to equality in some nebulous middle ground between fiery radicalism and patient compliance.

All finger-pointing aside, most of the organizing strategies being trumpeted by activists have zeroed in on specific pieces of legislation as rainbow-hued lamp posts leading toward of equality while dismissing the actual content of often hate-filled rhetoric used by the movement’s adversaries to block LGBT people from any number of political victories.

The late Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka was described in broken English by a Polish activist as a “leftish politic” and “huge supporter of gay rights. She help[ed] us so much.”

A few years ago Polish Pride events were routinely banned by the government. Participants typically faced physical attacks by fascists and religious bigots, and then arrest by the authorities for good measure. In 2005 Jaruga-Nowacka attended the Pride event in Warsaw — banned by then-Mayor Kaczynski. She used her position to prevent a virtually inevitable physical assault by the fascists. It’s thanks to the brave LGBT activists and allies like Jaruga-Nowacka that Pride Parades are now legal in Poland, despite a national history of virulent religious-based anti-gay bigotry. From what I’ve seen, we lack politicians of such courage here in the United States.

The Chicago-based Gay Liberation Network (GLN) lobbied the Law Center to list AFTAH as a hate group so that its lies against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people could be exposed to public scrutiny and condemnation. The listing appeared in the most recent issue of the Law Center’s quarterly publication, Intelligence Report.

The criteria that the Law Center historically has used to determine whether or not an organization is a hate group is not merely that it opposes legal equality for gays or others, but whether or not they intentionally utilize discredited and slanderous propaganda to spread lies about a group of people. By repeatedly using the phony “research” of defrocked psychologist Paul Cameron, who is roundly condemned by every major professional psychological association, AFTAH’s website apparently met the Law Center’s definition of a hate group.

The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks neo-fascist and other hate groups in the United States and when such groups violate the rights of others, often files suit against the hate groups. Several years ago, the Center briefly listed the Illinois Family Institute as a hate group when it listed Cameron’s discredited “research” on its website.

The Illinois Family Institute was founded and formerly headed by anti-gay activist Peter LaBarbera. After a series of defeats, most notably two spectacularly failed attempts to get anti-gay referendum on the Illinois state ballot, in 2006 LaBarbera was apparently forced to resign from the Illinois Family Institute, where upon he upon he re-launched Americans For Truth About Homosexuality and his rhetoric against gays has gotten even more unhinged.

Prior to his stint with the Illinois Family Institute, LaBarbera was employed by the anti-women’s rights organization, Concerned Women for America (CWA). Before joining CWA, he was employed as a reporter for the far-right Washington Times newspaper during the early years of the paper when it more tightly reflected the views of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, cult leader of the far right “Moonies” sect.

“Getting LaBarbera’s website labeled a ‘hate group’ is important because it helps assist the political marginalization of a man who has dedicated his career to denying others legal equality,” said Bob Schwartz of the Gay Liberation Network. “Through demonstrating against LaBarbera and his organizations over the years, GLN and others have made LaBarbera gain the reputation of being a bigot, and thus radioactive in many ‘respectable’ circles. This most recent victory, getting the Southern Poverty Law Center stamp of disapproval for LaBarbera’s website, makes it less possible for him to garner support for future anti-gay legislation and initiatives.”

When I blog about federal bills, I’m usually talking about ENDA – I still think this is our number one priority on the Hill – but there’s another big priority that we need to move on now. We need a full repeal of the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. My views on our current aggressive and misguided wars aside, the ban on gays serving openly in our military is one of the most disgusting and obvious examples of institutionalized homophobia we have in America. Its a symbol of everything wrong in our society when it comes to acceptance of gays and lesbians. We must have a full repeal this year.

Any effort to repeal it is about to get swept under the rug, unless HRC, our largest organization, steps up and demands the White House to take some leadership.

Unlike many of my fellow bloggers, I don’t go after HRC very often. I’ll be the first to say HRC has made some dumb-ass moves in the past, but I find it quite lazy to make them out to be monsters, the way most of the gay bloggosphere tends to do.

I have a confession to make. I’m a member of HRC. Not only am I a member, I sat on the Michigan Steering Committee for nearly five years. I was Membership and Community Events chair. I signed up thousands of new HRC members during my time. I still have a box of stickers in my closet. Oh, me and HRC are like *this.* Sometimes…

Is Obama now saying he’s for marriage equality? At yesterday’s Prayer Breakfast held by the evil covert group known as “The Family,” both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the organizations ties to the “kill gays” legislation in Uganda.

President Obama called the bill “odious” and remarkably stated “We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are — whether it’s here in the United States or … most recently in Uganda.” Well, if “The Family” is against gay marriage and he disagrees with them, does that means he’s for it?

Will Phillips, a student at West Fork School District in Washington County in Arkansas remained seated on October 5th while the rest of his class stood for the pledge. The substitute teacher tried to get Will to stand, but he wouldn’t budge. His reason: “I really don’t feel that there’s currently liberty and justice for all.”

The kid isn’t gay, his family isn’t gay, but they have gay friends and he’s been to Pride events and he recognizes that gay people are treated differently — why can’t the rest of the world see that?

Is the gay rights movement is in the pits? The disappointing November 2009 election left many people struggling to make sense of the narrow margin that took away the right for same-sex couples to wed in Maine.

Many folks blame President Obama and the Democratic Party for this blow to equality. Some high-profile bloggers are asking folks to stop giving money to the Democratic National Committee until we feel the love.

The bloggers aren’t asking for a boycott, just a temporary embargo until careful attention is given to their long list of grievances against the Democratic Party.

The Human Rights Campaign’s President Joe Solmonese, one of the biggest gay rights leaders in this country, recently spoke in Chicago on the progress we have made so far. He mentioned the passage of the Hate Crimes Bill and the passage of Enda through Congress as significant gains.

He also complained that the blogosphere’s timetable for change is unrealistic for the Obama administration and that we need to pull back and cut the President some slack. Joe rates Obama as President as a seven out of ten, with George W. Bush being a negative fourteen.
