One week til Glitter Day! Here’s a story full of sparkle to start the countdown.

The larva of the caddis fly (or casemaker fly) is known for constructing dense sheath-like cocoons from whatever materials it finds on the floors of streambeds, as a form of protective camouflage. In 2007, artist Hubert Duprat gave a lucky bunch of larva some bits of precious metal and gemstones to work with, and they made themselves look absolutely fabulous! Only trouble is, now they won’t be camouflaged anywhere, except maybe some wealthy miser’s hoard.

For years, alchemists tried to turn lead into gold for a get-rich-quick scheme with lead being the obvious choice because it has the same weight as gold.

Now, scientists have changed the color of gold from, well, gold to purple. Why though? Because they wanted to see what kind of energy they can harvest from the sun so they mixed gold particles, citric acid and protein and exposed it to light.

From the article

If it turned purple, that would signal that the gold atoms had received electrons and used the donated energy to bunch together as small, purple-colored nanoparticles. And that would mean that the protein used the sunlight to excite the citric acid and trigger a transfer of energy.

So it did turn purple, but what all this means may be too early to tell. Now will purple gold be a new fashion trend?

Ever notice how crazy people LOVE to talk about gold? Specifically the gold standard. If you’re ever at a party and someone starts ranting about how our economy is built on a house of cards because our currency isn’t based on gold anymore, put your cocktail down slowly walk away. Believing that we should revert to the gold standard is the “gold standard” or litmus test for crazy. Why are crazy people attracted to the gold? Because it’s shiny. Crazy people love to hoard shiny objects.

No country in the world uses gold as a way of determining the value of money anymore. So how does paper money get it’s value in today’s society? iPods.

But, more specifically, it’s the goods and services that the country’s economy provides that gives value to their currency.

Because we just LOVE to ponder what will be happening tomorrow on the Feast of Fools, we were wondering what will happen to our money in the future when everything is even more hi-tech and when so many of us may hopefully live in outer space.

The British National Space Centre thought about how space tourists are going to have to find a way to spend money in outer space. After all, the magnetic stripes on credit cards might get erased by solar radiation, coins may cause damage, and it would be impossible to deduct your paypal money without the internet in outer space.

What they came up is the QUID, or “Quasi Universal Intergalactic Denomination” which are clear teflon pebbles that you can presumably spend at any stellar tourist destination someday.

Why they don’t call the new currency “Space Money” is beyond me but I wouldn’t mind getting a blue pebble for a birthday present (hint hint April 16th). Amanda, a fan of science fiction insists that all money will simply be described as credits.

We just love to talk about Petra the fickle swan who is trying to get back with her monster sized boat lover. It seems that with all the baggage Petra has been carrying around, her latest beau got sick of it and left her. She’s going back to the big swan boat. When will she ever get it together?

We also talk about the FDA’s unscientific ban on gay men donating blood despite the fact there is a blood shortage going on in America, a trans man who gets pregnant and a firefighter who is fighting to get her job back after burning down her father’s house.

We love our fans, really we do. Alexis and Angie, pictured here were some of the very first listeners we ever had for our podcast way back in the spring of 2005, even before iTunes started supporting podcast subscriptions.

Before we won our first People’s Choice Podcast Award. Before we rose to the top of the iTunes popularity charts for a gay podcast. Before we knew what we were doing, they were there with us, every step of the way.

To celebrate our ten year anniversary and their five year anniversary as a couple, our lovely lesbian listeners traveled all the way from “sin-sin-ati” to hang out with us this weekend.

Join us today as Amanda Steinstein, Marc Felion, Alexis and Angie, the Cincinnati Lesbians and me Fausto Fernós open up a bunch of Easter baskets sent to us by our listeners with sexy results.

If you live in Chicago, why don’t you join Marc Felion, Amanda Steinstein, Alexis, Angie and of course me, Fausto Fernós at the FARK party this Saturday night. Fark is one of our favorite websites for odd news and social trends and it’s a great opportunity to meet some of Chicago’s Web 2.0 Movers and Shakers in the flesh. We’ll be there! Click here to get more info about the event.
