Meeks is one of the biggest names in the race, and he’s looking to unite Chicago’s African American population behind him to pull out a win.

For gays and lesbians, however, Meeks is someone to watch very closely.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the organization that tracks and works to prevent hate and bias related crimes, Meeks is one of the “Gatekeepers,” a group of Chicago preachers seeking to erase the division between Church and State. It takes a lot to be on SPLC’s watch list–there are only a handful of official anti-gay hate groups on their list of hate groups nationwide and the Illinois Family Institute is one–for Meeks to get on that watch list should make us all very nervous he’s starting this early.

Meeks isn’t just anti-marriage. He supports stripping away even the most basic human rights for LGBT people, opposes employment protection, and has indicated if he is elected mayor, he would address existing protections for LGBT people (presumably to dismantle them) if he gets “bored.”

Yup, if he gets bored enough, he’ll keep busy by making our lives hell.

When asked recently on Fox about how he would deal with LGBT issues if mayor, Meeks said:

“Now if I were sitting around bored with nothing to do, that stuff might come up. But I expect to be so busy with schools, crime and budget problems during my first term that I wouldn’t have any time.”

Meeks’ record on LGBT rights speaks otherwise, however, as much of his evangelism has involved attacking LGBT people and demonizing our community–literally. He’ll likely move quickly to begin undoing rights gained during the Daley administration.

What do you think can be done to get Chicago’s faith leaders and African American community leaders to stand up and denounce Meeks’ hate and vitriol?

Schlessinger got a call from an African-American woman who said she was married to a white man and was getting fed up with her husband allowing his family and friends to say things that she felt were racist.

Dr. Laura’s response was to chastise the woman for being “oversensitive,” marrying outside of her race and went on to utter the N-word several times.

In 2000 Dr. Laura had a TV show which was later cancelled due to pressure from the public’s negative response to her hate speech, calling gays and lesbians “biological errors” and callinggay men child molesters.

The Rev. Al Sharpton decried the incident during an interview with Anderson Cooper on Thursday. “That is despicable,” Sharpton said about Schlessinger’s comment about the caller marrying outside of her race.

“She said the word over and over, and in a very animated way, I might add, but that she actually, if you listen carefully to the logic of what she was saying was that the N-word was not offensive.”

Today she apologized for it, going all over the media saying she was wrong.

Here’s some free advice. Don’t poke beehives with a stick. Youtube did it when it shut down eight year old Luke Taylor’s Lukeywes1234 account for supposedly violating the terms of service by not being of age.

The popular online community 4chan declared January 6th to be YouTube Porn Day to extract revenge on behalf of the little boy by asking everyone to upload innocent looking videos mixed with grotesque porn images to make the video sharing giant working overtime to take it down.

The way YouTube reacts to things like this makes me think it’s run by a handful of petty, immature people.

We’re not sure if the prank had any impact, but I’m personally hoping it sent a message to Google to allow users who have had their accounts or videos taken down unfairly to be able to do something about it. How about offering phone or email support for a small fee like Apple does for all their products? I shudder to know what tech support for the Nexus One is like.
