This poor guy was expecting a question from a celebrity on Millionaire and who did he get? Bile-filled John McCain. Ugh!

Best Week Ever reports this poor gay guys boyfriend was in the audience.

John McCain locked her in a cage, took away all access to technology, sewed her mouth shut and–when all else failed–tranquilized her with heavy-duty animal tranq, usually reserved for elephants. All to try to control her and quiet her because she just loves the gays so much.

Or so you would have thought from the LGBT community when Cindy McCain tweeted a retraction of her NoH8 video which seemed to indicate her support of repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’

“I fully support the NOH8 campaign and all it stands for and am proud to be a part of it. But I stand by my husband’s stance on DADT.”

That’s a huge 180 from the Senator’s wife in this ‘NoH8′ video released earlier in the week:

I was skeptical from the get go, before the Twitter flip-flop showed up. I honestly do not enjoy being right about something so sad. However, the reaction from other LGBT activists I know was stunning.

“Either you are right and it’s all strategic manipulation in an effort to gain votes. Or she really believes in different policies than her husband, but… she spoke out a little too loudly and Mccain and the GOP have scrambled to reel her in. She comes from a background where the wife obeys the husband, so her words today may be what she was told to say, not what she believes.”

“I think the more likely explanation is that she meant it and her brute of a husband yelled at her.”

These were just two justifications posted on my facebook page alone. I’ve read countless other responses where LGBT activists are apologizing for Cindy’s Jekyll and Hyde act. The general consensus: “John must have made her tweet that.”

I don’t profess to know what goes on in the McCain household when the media isn’t watching. But I do know one thing, neither can you.

Rather than call her on her two-faced retreat, LGBT activists, so desperate to hold onto any celebrity affirmation, especially one seemingly so politically novel, have been making every excuse for Cindy McCain’s deception in the book.

But why? Why do we have to apologize for her? We don’t owe that to her.

There are a lot of Republicans I respect, actually. Republicans like Judy Biggert, an US House member from Illinois who has stood firm in her pro-LGBT stances for years and does not shy away from breaking from her party on controversial votes. Judy Biggert spoke volumes when she voted to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’

Cindy McCain can’t cast a vote in Congress on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ The only power she has to affect change on this discriminatory law is her voice, and she’s instead used it to muddy the waters and create confusion–and LGBT activists are far too eager to offer her political cover in the form of speculation and assumption.

We don’t owe Cindy McCain that. If anyone owes anyone anything, Cindy McCain owes us an explanation for her two-faced treachery.

As a community, we must drop the battered wife act. We can accept an ally who is only an ally in name and not in deed. We can’t make excuses for fair-weather friends who drop us at the drop of a hat.

The LGBT community has an abusive relationship with Cindy McCain, and its time that we said goodbye.

…It seems like we lost the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” fight yesterday when Senator John McCain successfully led a filibuster against the Defense Authorization bill that contained repeal provisions. However, its important to remember the bill isn’t dead. There was no vote on the bill itself, only a vote on whether or not to call the bill to the Senate floor for a vote. Yep, the Senate has to vote to vote. Yeah, and we wonder why nothing gets done.

Anyhow, the bill can still be called. There’s still some danger, though. Republicans will again halt the bill if none of their concerns with how the vote went down aren’t addressed. This means that aspects of the bill are going to be up for negotiation–including the controversial amendments like the DREAM Act, the legalization of privately funded abortions in military hospitals and–of course–Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal.

Its important to note that, although John McCain’s problem with the bill was Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, that wasn’t everyone’s problem. In fact, most Republicans weren’t even thinking about DADT at all. Republicans like Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe and Democratic (barely) Senator Blanche Lincoln were angry about Majority Leader Reid’s move to block any more changes to the Defense Authorization and close it off from any more amendments. While many have noted this might have been a choice to protect the DADT repeal, ultimately it harmed it by preventing a vote on the Defense Authorization bill. In the end, the votes are there in the Senate for the National Defense Authorization Act with the DADT repeal. As long as we can get it to a vote.

What’s it going to take to get it to a vote, though? Its going to take opening the bill up to Republican amendments. If this is the case, we risk subjecting the bill to amendments that water down the repeal language. If some Republican proposed such an amendment, however, it would have to be accepted by majority vote–which would be a hurdle for Republicans as the Senate has been inundated with calls to go ahead and pass the repeal.

In fact, we can bet that the NDAA will pass the Senate. The Republicans’ pro-Military image would take a massive hit if the Department of Defense is de-authorized over a policy that 75-80% of Americans are in support of lifting.

This now turns into a game of chess. Or rather, more likely, a game of chicken. Its going to turn into who is going to flinch first. Because the Republicans won’t allow it to come to a point where they throw the entire Department of Defense into upheaval over this. But they’ll drag this out as long as they can until they get as much of what they want as they can.

Our role. We must keep up the pressure on the Senate to tell them, of all the changes to make, not to water down the DADT repeal. Of all three amendments, this has the most widespread support in the American public, we can save it. We must also tell our Democratic leadership to open up and allow Republicans to add amendments.

Don’t flush DADT repeal down the toilet yet. It’s not dead. It’s just in a coma on life support with a grim prognosis.

PS, why did I use the goldfish image? Here is how I started the piece over at Out & About Illinois Magazine:

Being adopted by my sister has to be some sort of punishment for pets with bad karma. She’s not a particularly good caretaker. Our backyard is littered with the graves of turtles, fish and hermit crabs.

One such fish was one I won for my little sister at a church festival. As was her usual habit, she greatly neglected “Goldie” until he took ill and she was suddenly very concerned.

Goldie looked quite dead when I saw him, floating in the bowl. I was getting ready to flush him. Then I saw his one fin twitch. I tapped the bowl, and suddenly he started alternating floating and swimming on his side using one fin.

We tried aerating the bowl as much as possible. Goldie began to spend more time swimming sideways than floating. For the next few months, Goldie never seemed to regain the use of the other side of his little goldfish body, but he did live. Every day, we thought it would be Goldie’s last day. Every day, he’d float up to the top of the bowl and lie there motionless, and every day we’d tap the bowl and he’d start fumbling around sideways again.

Millions of toddlers have found their goldfish floating in their bowls and been told by their parents “he’s just sleeping.” Well in my sister’s fish’s case, it turned out to be true.

Let’s revive this fish!

In case you missed it…

Today at 5:00pm in Phoenix Arizona, there is going to be a rally at Senator McCain’s office in support of the five activists who were arrested today at noon, Phoenix time, protesting Senator McCain’s stance against repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Meg Sneed, Jimmy Gruender, Lee Walters, (Lonnie) Allen Howard-Stidham and Luisa Valdez went into custody around noon Phoenix time, were processed and released.

There isn’t much more that I understand about what happened today.

Today in the early Phoenix morning, five activists from the Human Equality Rights Organizers (H.E.R.O.)–possibly inspired by the amazing actions of Dan Choi and GetEQUAL–entered Senator McCain’s office and stayed, until they were arrested.

WHAT: First Class Petty Officer Lonnie Allen Howard-Stidham served his country proudly in the United States for seven years before he was discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell on June 18, 2007. Howard-Stidham states “Since the very beginning of my Coast Guard (CG) Career our core values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty have been driven into my very being; if given the opportunity I would reenlist in a heartbeat.”

Howard-Stidham will be asking to speak to Senator McCain about the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy along with four friends. Howard-Stidham and friends will not leave McCain’s office until the Senator meets with his constituents and stands behind his 2006 quote that “The day that the leadership of the military comes to me and says, ‘Senator, we ought to change the policy,’ then I think we ought to consider seriously changing it.”

An open letter to John McCain from one of the activists:

Senator John McCain U.S. Senate 241 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510-0001 Subject: Repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Dear Senator McCain,
As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support legislation in the United States Senate to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” statute governing military service by lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans.

I want to tell you my story and what I went through:

Since the very beginning of my Coast Guard (CG) Career our core values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty have been driven into my very being; Not only from the CG but also from my family. As I moved on through and graduated Boot Camp I went on to CG Station Neah Bay, and then CG Personnel Command before coming a recruit Company Commander (AKA Drill Instructor), by far the best and most challenging assignment I have had.

Being a Company Commander wasn’t something that I thought I could do at first. I remember at my last unit people were actually taking bets as to whether or not I would fail CC school. Before I became a CC the uniform and our Core Values meant exactly what they are core values that guide us and a uniform that we were with pride. But as I went through CC school, something changed within me. I found a new sense of confidence. I believed in myself that I could do something that was so hard. And not just do it with mediocrity but setting the standard. My school chief, Chief Sparks told me that I was # 1 in the class.

As I began running companies it became apparent more than ever what the CG’s Core Values meant. It had too; I had to make these recruits understand what they meant and how to put them into their own lives. I also noticed myself focusing on the uniform. Realizing and teaching that the uniform is a privilege. Too many times we forget what this uniform means. Is it just some piece of clothing? It is something you just have to put on before you come to work? Is it just something that is required so you do it? I say NO to all of those things. It is a privilege and an honor to wear it. Words can’t begin to describe what this uniform means to me. I wake up every morning blessed knowing that I GET to wear the uniform. It is a sense of Pride, Commitment, and Respect.

I had big plans for myself in the Coast Guard. I had just received orders to the 2nd national Security Cutter the CGC WASCHE which was my #1 pick, and I had just submitted my Officer Candidate package. But as I told the rest of my family I began to feel as if I wasn’t showing Honor to the CG and having 100% of my integrity. That is why I wrote a letter to my Commanding Officer. Even though I knew that by writing that letter that there was a 99.9% chance I would get discharged I had to do it. I had to uphold our Core Values. I had to keep my integrity. That is what I tell my recruits, your integrity is something only you can give away; no one can take it from you.

I love the CG more than anything. What scared me the most or hurt the most…. was the fact that I knew that my days to wear the uniform were numbered, that very soon that VERY privilege that I had would be TAKEN away from me. That is what hurt. Even though I got discharged I know that my legacy still lives on in the CG through all the recruits I have trained. I know that I have done my best while serving the Coast Guard. But because I am GAY I am told that I can’t.

I wrote a letter to my Commanding Officer, because someone threatened to “out” me, and use it as blackmail. Could I have denied it? Yes! But that isn’t what the CG taught me. It taught me to be truthful and to have honor. When I came out as Gay, you know what happened at my unit? Nothing! My fellow peers wrote 25 letters of recommendation, in hopes that it would help me stay in the CG. They stood beside me; they didn’t treat me different at all. So Senator I ask you, should I have lied? Should I have broken the very core values that were taught to me for my own personal gain? I don’t think so.

If given the opportunity I would reenlist in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t even think twice. I love this country more than anything. I am asking to meet with you on Monday April 26th, 2010 at 0815. So you can put a face to this devastating law. I am also urging you as your constituent to become a co-sponsor to the Military Readiness Enhancement Act S. 3065, which was introduced to the Senate on March 3, 2010. Thank you for your time and I look forward to speaking with you.

ADVOCATE: Protesters Stake Out McCain’s Office on DADT:

Five protesters affiliated with Get Equal are demonstrating at Sen. John McCain’s office to garner his support for a repeal on “don’t ask, don’t tell.” The organization is asking for people to contact McCain’s office to voice their support for ending the ban on gay and lesbian service members serving openly in the military. Shortly following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address in January, in which he announced he wanted to repeal the ban, McCain issued his own statement, calling the repeal a “mistake.”

I have yet to see any statements from EAA or GetEqual as of yet. According to an email blast sent out by EAA board member Nik Maciejewski, one of those present at the sit in is GetEQUAL’s Alan Bounville who Wednesday was among those who interrupted a House of Representatives Education and Labor Committee Hearing to demand movement on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

There is confusion as to whether this is an action by GetEQUAL or if it is an action by Equality Across America. Also, I reported earlier that Alan Bounville is present, however, it seems he merely sent out the early alert to the people who first tweeted. I’m not sure if he’s there or not now. All we know is that five protesters were staging an anti-DADT protest in McCain’s office this morning and may very well be arrested now.

What was up with that red carpet? It hurt my eyes!

Wasn’t it great when Tom Brockaw told McCain to get out of the way so he could finish the show?

Obama came across once again as eloquent, well informed and level headed. Is America ready to have a competent leader? I think so, Yes we can! Nail McCain to the wall Obama!

What does the sound of a failing political campaign sound like? “TERRORISM!” Last weekend Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain both directly declared their political opponent associated with terrorists and even scoff indifferently when their supporters jokingly threatened to kill Senator Obama. Is this what the election has boiled down to?

One way the Republicans can win this election is to simply lock away Sen. Obama in Guantanamo bay, but as Harold and Kumar showed in their movie, it’s way easy to escape.

I went with Michael Lehet to see the Scooty and JoJo’s Carpenter’s Halloween, a reenactment of Halloween John Carpenter’s Halloween set to the music of the Carpenters. It’s truly an odd mix of horror and camp. If you are a fan of camp, drag, the movie Halloween or the music of the Carpenters then this is a must see for you.

Michael and I also saw Watch Out based on Joseph Suglia’s book that features the super sexy Matt Riddlehoover as narcissistic Jonathan Burrows, who is only sexually attracted to himself and even makes love to a blow up doll that looks like himself.

Through Jonathan’s journey we encounter many strange characters, all of whom are sexually attracted to the very handsome protagonist but in who he has no interest whatsoever. He delivers a condescending diatribe against them about why he would never find them attractive and even kills some of them. This movie is a totally over the top cross between Strangers with Candy and Jeffrey Dahlmer.

Michael convinced me to go the Improv Everywhere’s MP3 Chicago which I initially didn’t want to go because it sounded a bit hokey- I was to download an mp3 audio file, be at a specific location and do what ever it told me to do at a precise time. Now, I’ve seen enough X-Files or Twilight Zone episodes to know how terribly wrong things like this can go. For all I know it could have turned me into a government assassin.

But, after a long night partying with Miss Tracy Tyler we all hopped in the car and experienced what turned out to be a very fun day. Sometimes it is fun to do just let yourself go and let someone else call the shots. And I totally kicked ass in the Epic Battle.

McCain’s is SO not “hot.” Although the Arizona Senator said he would never launch an attack ad during the 2008 U.S. Presidential Campaign, McCain broke his promise and last week aired an anti-Obama ad criticizng the Illinois Senator as “too famous” to become president, comparing him to vapid celebutants Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

The only problem here is, both Britney Spears and Paris Hilton’s family are well known Republican party contributors, including an $80,000 contribution from the Hilton Clan last year to McCain’s campaign.

Fundraising rule #1- don’t insult your donors. Thank them.

When Grandpa Hilton got a word of it, he blew a fuse, and heads have been rolling down at the Republican party headquarters. And that my friends, is hot.

Montauk Monster! Have the Hamptons found it’s own “chupacabra?” Last week Gawker blog posted a weird photo of something resembling a hairless raccoon that washed up on the beach of the town know for being a playground for the wealthy and ridiculous.

Many are speculating it’s a sea turtle without its shell, an escaped government experiment, an alien or a fake. Still many are all excited speculating on what it is, even though the carcass itself is missing. Who knows even if this photo was taken in the Hamptons at all?

Remember the 44 lb. overweight cat that went missing a week ago? Many thought that it was curtains for Princess Chunk, the chubby but lovable cat that surprised everyone by disappearing from her home in New Jersey.

Well it turns out Princess Chunk was a dude all along, a cat named Powder, just like our loveable Tracy! A happy ending for P-Chunk, as he/she will now be living in a happy home, thanks to the media attention, our chubby tabby will be living with a new family. I can hear happy purrs already.

Michael Lehet has been writing lately on new technology on his blog and brought over the cool new Cinemizer. It’s exciting but a little hard on the eyes.

Described by the company as “your take-along personal video screen. In the future, you’ll be able to watch any movie stored on your iPod anywhere.” Today it’s just an annoying to use, funny looking gadget.

I’ll leave it to your colorful imaginations the possible uses of this new technology, but let’s just say it still a long way from a fully-functional Star Trek style holodeck.

Speaking of which, Sept. 1 is the last day of the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton in Las Vegas, which we’re hoping to attend for the podcaster’s conference. What’s replacing it? Michael Jackson’s theater. Did we mention we need your help?

One looks like the angry old man next door chasing children off the front lawn with his rake, the other looks like a “historial figure.” I was so impressed with his speech, referencing a very mature idea of global citizenship not heard from any political candidiate since the late 1970s, when Carl Sagan brought up the idea in his book and award winning PBS miniseries “Cosmos.”

Reaching out to skeptics back home, Obama Herladed the “dream of freedom” declaring:
“I love America… People of Berlin, people of the world this is our moment. This is our time… I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen – a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world.” Wow.

Despite being on Monday night was a big success! The intimate crowed enjoyed the performances by performance artist Tim Miller and comedian Adam Guerino. We’re really excited about this venture and we hope it grows. The live podcast at Sidetrack about alcohol and the GLBT community will be up later this week. It went off without a hitch and was well received by everyone in attendance.

The highlight of the evening was when the director, Jen, asked what people liked the best about her new look and Amanda’s friend shouted “her boobs!” and then proceeded to fondle Amanda. Although it won’t make the final cut, we can only hope that TLC will put out a “Too Hot for What Not to Wear” video.

The new X-Files movie features the ultimate boogie men, a gay couple married in Massachusetts! This may be a bit of a spoiler but when is Hollywood going to learn that that gays or trannies aren’t the enemy?

SPOILER! The movie started out ok and we felt like were seeing old friends on the big screen but we were really disappointed when the storyline devolved to feature a psychic link between a convicted pedophile priest and his former victim who kills with his boyfriend to get a new body. End Spoiler!

I remember the X-Files being smart and savvy and I just wonder what the hell they were thinking of producing this lackluster and insulting film. We waited all these years for this?

PLUS: We have an interview with author and talk show host Scott Sherman, who’s got a fabulous new book out First You Fall: A Kevin Connor Mystery, a funny mystery about a sexy gay hustler with a heart of gold. Makes an excellent summer reading, and why not? The main character loves to listen to the Feast of Fools.

Scott’s has produced two podcasts, Digital Photography Show and the archived The Gay Parenting Show. We met Scott last year at the New Media Expo when were both up for the top award for best podcast. Neither of us won and as Scott says “I’m kinda glad neither of us won or else we wouldn’t like each other.” Well, we would have liked you anyway Scott, if we had won.
