Here’s some deals I uncovered on my last trip to New York and I will give them a try again next month on my way to Europe.

Perhaps one of the best pre-fix deals around is at Becco at 355 West 46th Street.. For lunch at $17.95 and dinner for $22.95 (oops I said $21.95 on the podcast; I was wrong) per person you can try the Sinfonia di Pasta in which you get a 2 course meal that includes a Caesar salad or Anitpasto Misto, as well as, a trio of daily pasta specials. THREE PASTAS!! And it’s all you can eat!! Don’t think of this mall-like all you can eat buffet with canned & flavorless foods…this is fresh, high quality, extremely Italian cuisine served tableside by a very attentive staff. You’d expect nothing less from famed owner Lidia Bastianich, who has instructed many of us how to create great Italian dinner with her television show. You can even get a bottle of Italian wine from their extensive wine list all priced at $25.

Located in the heart of the Theater District, Restaurant Row was created to draw tourists and theatergoers in from their pre and post theater dinners. Becco is a shining beacon in what can easily be a tourist trap. In Becco’s case, the heavy trafficked Restaurant Row is a blessing as they are able to keep their pre-fixed menu available year round. Reservations are highly recommended, especially for a pre-theater or weekend dinner!

And if you want a feast for the eyes as well, Executive Chef William Gallagher sure is woofy!

If you’re craving some diner food before or after a show, you might try Westway Diner, which is open 24 hours and is the place Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David used to meet to discuss “Seinfeld” before it went on television. Located at 614 Ninth Ave., Westway also has free delivery in the area via its website. If you want the best they have to offer, I’d stick to anything breakfasty among Eggs and Omelets, burgers, sandwiches or anything Greek (since they are Greek). You get nice portions, good food and it won’t break the bank. The menu is a bit overly extensive and they don’t excel at dinner items or anything fried.

If you’re even more budget conscious, try:

FOR PIZZA SLICES: My favorite slices are at Patzeria at 233 W. 46th Street, right across the street from the “In the Heights” musical. Open until midnight, I love their Grandma’s slice, lasagna slice and the white cheese as well as the normal slices and whole pies. They don’t have a website but they do offer great service, good variety, catering and breakfast specials from 7-11am.

There’s also the ever increasing in popularity Fat Sal’s, which has four locations in Manhattan and has a $3 off coupon on their website. Their pizzas are also pretty good – I tried a variety of slices. I don’t know who fat Sal is but the pizza slices sure are.

CHEAP BREAD AND BAKED GOODS: During the day, Amy’s Breads is simply known as the great reasonably priced bakery with quality breads, critically acclaimed sticky buns and fantastic pre-made sandwiches (great to take on the airplane). But after 4pm, Amy’s becomes the bakery bargain spot. As everything is fresh daily, at 4pm they sell off their leftover sandwiches at half-priced to make room for the fresh ones that become available at 6pm. Amy’s has three NYC locations – check them out at www.amysbread.com and at the same time you can read all about their awards, expansions and buy Amy’s cookbook.

TIME FOR A SPLURGE: While all of the restaurant listed here are mostly near the Theater District so you can easily grab a bite before or after a show, sometimes you need to get away and splurge. The place I go to is Sarabeth’s Kitchen. With three restaurants in Manhattan, one in Florida, a bakery in Chelsea and two outlets at the Whitney and Lord & Taylor, Sarabeth must be doing something right. While I have not strayed for my fondness of her baked goods and jams (which you can order online at www.sarabeth.com, which I did and made many people happy for Christmas), Sarabeth’s does do lunch and dinner too. But since I am so drawn to her basket of muffins and jams, I always order breakfast. I prefer the Central Park South location as you can walk off your breakfast in the park. But do get there and try one of her fluffier than air omelets and no matter how full you are, get that basket of muffins and enjoy. Be sure to bring cash to buy some of her spreadable fruit to take with you. Yes, you can order online and ship it home. But you might just get the craving later that day for another taste of her fine baked goods. In a way, it’s nice that Oprah Winfrey talked about her baked goods – as no matter how tasty everything is, we’re sure Sarabeth’s could use a little push in this economy.

Believe it or not, the streets of Manhattan are alive with the sound of music!

In the Heights
First of all, as I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, “In the Heights” really is the #1 show to see. It’s still fresh, exciting and as vibrant as it was when it first opened. “In the Heights” is truly the mash-up musical of our time, mixing traditional Broadway ballads and choreography with hip hop beats and raps.

The show is about to approach its one year anniversary on Broadway (even though it’s been around in workshops and off-Broadway since 2002) and many of the same stars are still with the show. The main star and creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda,
still amazes after all of this time, but he is leaving in February, so now is the time to see him and the show. I’m sure his replacement will bring his own freshness to this show, but still catch Lin-Manuel while you can.

“In the Heights” also has a lottery for every performance for front row tickets for $26.50. You need to show up at the theater 2 1/2 hours before the show and the drawing is held 2 hours before the show (cash only).

Shrek the Musical
If you’ve got two days in Manhattan, “Shrek the Musical” proved to be more fun than I even imagined. I am not a fan of the movie but went to see the live musical version because of the dream cast of Brian D’arcy James, Sutton Foster, Christopher Sieber and Daniel Breaker.

This cast more than delivers! James is in fine voice in the title role even though I did miss his personal charisma behind that green face. Foster continues to build on her great resume of theater roles as Fiona and Breaker makes you forget Eddie Murphy as the Donkey.

Sieber practically steals the show as Lord Farquaad, playing the entire role on his knees to bring himself to the character’s diminutive height. Other actors better take notice of Sieber because no matter the size the role, he usually makes any show his.

“Shrek” also has plenty of underlining double entendres that should appeal to adults in a seemingly kids show. Homage is paid to other Broadway shows in such a subtle way that they might sneak by even the more sophisticated theatergoer. Some of the adult and even gay overtures are easily noticeable, from the song “Freak Flag” to the tranny Big Bad Wolf. And since this is a hot ticket, you won’t always find them at the half-priced booth. If you pay full price, I will say the Broadway Theatre has the best box seats.

For discount tickets, you can try the show’s lottery. Sign up on the 3rd Floor of M&M World on the corner of 48th and Broadway each performance day for your chance to win $26.50 (plus fees).

The Marvelous Wonderettes
Mondays in New York usually offer few options as most shows are closed. But off-Broadway there’s a very cute, more concert style show “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” a tale of a high school singing quartet who bring their in-fighting to the stage for all to see while they sing popular 1950s and 1960s songs.

There’s a really cute bit in which the audience members have to vote for Prom Queen. Of course, our four would-be friends are all on the ballot and the back-stabbing takes front stage as the winner is announced. All four leads are wonderful and excel in different ways – Farah Alvin seems to have the stronger voice, Bets Malone has more a comical flare, Victoria Matlock is better at improv and Beth Malone is the queen of slapstick. And for an old-fashioned show, they have a great website with downloads, fun facts and links to their facebook and myspace pages – so please check out the
extremely fun website at marvelouswonderettes.com.

The American Plan
If musicals aren’t your thing, Richard Greenberg’s “The American Plan” is a well-layered tale of an over-bearing German mother and her over-privileged daughter, coming to emotional blows in their Catskills estate, while meeting a couple of potential ne’er-do-well. For the most part, the cast of five all bring their A game, even though Mercedes Ruehl’s German accent comes and goes.

Greenberg, writer of Tony winning “Take Me Out,” continues to amaze with his honest, organic dialog and the show’s sexy little plot twist. “The American Plan” is part of Manhattan Theater Club and you can actually get some good price on tickets through their website if you buy a passport for the season. Check it out at: mtc-nyc.org.

If you really have to see the show, you should definitely buy the tickets before you come to New York at full price and get the perfect seats you want. For discount tickets, besides the TKTS booths and different shows lotteries in New York, I think a good way to get Broadway show tickets is at www.theatermania.com. And while it’s not great for New York City, www.goldstar.com offers discounts in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Washington DC, Boston, San Diego and Chicago.

And with all of the money you’re saving on discount tickets, you might also try “Avenue Q,” “August: Osage County” and “Alter Boyz.” These are must see shows that right now are incredibly cheap to see rivaling the price of a movie ticket.

Last week over 13 shows on the Great White Way closed, several you thought would be there for a long time – “Hairspray” and “Young Frankenstein.”

Broadway had a nice holiday season with shoppers needing a warm refuge from the snow or people enjoying their Christmas present show tickets. But until there’s the spring thaw, things look awfully icy for Broadway. So I’m going this coming week to check out what might be hot to take us through the winter.

Shows that look very promising include “Shrek, the Musical.” Now, I am not a big fan of the movie, but this musical has a dream cast including Brian Darcy James as Shrek. Mr. James has has one of the strongest, under-appreciated voices on Broadway and received a Tony nomination in for “Sweet Smell of Success” but I also remember loving him in a smaller role in “Titanic, the Musical.” I am glad he’s finally getting the notice he deserves albeit in green face. And his lovely leading lady, Sutton Foster, although under-utilized in “Young Frankenstein,” charmed us in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Furthermore, it will really be exciting to see how Daniel Breaker does his role as Donkey. Breaker made a triumphant and Tony nominated debut last year in the short-lived musical “Passing Strange” and I expect a lot out of him. I promise to keep you posted on if the shows deserves all of this attention.

Also a strong new Broadway show is “Billy Elliot” which I saw it in London last year. It was a magical experience which totally surpasses the film upon which it was based. It has lots of fun songs, but we’d expect nothing less from Elton John.

This trip to New York will also be bring a repeat viewing of “In the Heights” which is quickly becoming a staple among long-running musicals. “In the Heights” is approaching its one year anniversary on Broadway and most of its original cast remains in tact. It will be exciting to see if it still has the vibrancy as it did when it first opened. In today’s modern musical world of hip hop, rap and dance club remixes, today’s younger music fans might identify “In the Heights” as a musical mash up, combining hip hop with a traditional show tune, making a sound that will appeal to young and old alike.

But I am eager to see what other gems I might find on and off Broadway this winter. Will it be “An American Plan,” “Pal Joey,” or “The Marvellous Wonderettes?” I’ll report back after my New York trip.

If you can’t make it to Broadway, there’s always theater you can find in your own town. One way to seek out shows is through playbill.com, where you’ll find a tab on the left side of the page under tickets, so click on “Regional/Touring” and search by city.

That’s how I found “Miss Saigon,” the Tony award winning musical that was the tenth longest running Broadway musical of all times, playing just outside of Chicago.

The show may not be coming back to New York for now but it is playing an exclusive run through March 8 at the Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace, IL. The greatest appeal for me with “Miss Saigon” has always been the spectacle of its grandiose sets. This show had a helicopter and Cadillac right on stage. If that didn’t make your jaw drop, then nothing in the theater will. But alas, this production is more scaled down and the over-the-top sets are gone so don’t expect to see a helicopter land on this stage.

But your jaw will drop with the shows performances. Melinda Chua Smith and Kevin Vortmann bring their own magic to the story of star-crossed lovers who meet during the Vietnam War. Smith’s Kim is an orphaned young woman who is forced into prostitution and rescued by the sweet GI Chris, played by Vortmann. The modern retelling of the classic “Madame Butterfly” makes its own mark as “Miss Saigon” primarily due to its musical score, filled with many memorable songs.

And while I have seen “Miss Saigon” several times, I was very impressed with both Smith, who has an excellent range and was able to make her songs emotional without being overly dramatic, which is easy to do with the source material. And Vortmann, who has a great rich quality to his voice and was able to sparkle in the quiet moments as well as those times when he needs to truly belt it out. He looks good with his shirt off too. In fact, we met Melinda Chua Smith after the show and I told her I should be her understudy so that I might have the chance to find myself in the arms of the hot men in the show. She seemed a very good sport about it.

Melinda as actually a really nice and sweet woman – and she seemed so fresh, even though she just played the part two times that day. She is quite convincing as the 17 year old Kim, which might be surprising when you consider that Melinda is in her mid 30s and has played various parts in “Miss Saigon” since the early 1990s.

Tickets can be purchased at www.drurylaneoakbrook.com or www.ticketmaster.com. The ticket prices can be as low as $22 but if you want to try to find even a better deal, try www.chicago.oodle.com or www.chicagoplays.com.

In a recent trip to Los Angeles, I found a lot of great ways to have fun at the theatre. First of all, the Center Theatre Group has addressed tough times head on by offering hot tix to certain performances for $20. This collection of live theatres always have high-end touring Broadway shows or even some terrific Broadway-bound productions. If you act quickly (as it closes Dec. 21), you can catch “The Little Dog Laughed,” which won a Tony for its lead actress Julie White, who is in the LA production as well.

This is a gem of a show about a closeted movie star who gets caught with his hands in the cookie jar (or actually in the arms of a male hustler). But the story really shines with the acid-tongue, fast-talking, riotous White as his agent who is the one who really holds nothing back. White’s performance and the witty dialogue of Douglas Carter Beane are worth the price of admission.

The Center also has an original musical coming up early next year – “Minsky’s,” a fact-based telling of the famed burlesque club. Written by Bob Martin (“The Drowsy Chaperone”), this will likely be a crowd pleaser, but we will certainly keep you posted. It opens January 21, 2009.

And as long as you’re in LA, you must catch “I Love My Wife,” closing Dec. 14 at the Brentwood Theatre. This is a seldom revived musical dealing with wife swapping and the 1970s, this clever show has a great ensemble cast with Jason Alexander, Patrick Cassidy, Lea Thompson and Vicki Lewis. It seems the cast is mostly made up of TV stars, which one might expect from an LA production. But many forget that before “Seinfeld,” Alexander won a Tony award for best actor in a MUSICAL and Cassidy also has done a lot of regional, touring and Broadway musicals.

The show is a nice flashback to the 1970s with the cast all in top form. Alexander, who also is the theatre group’s artistic director, makes you forget George from “Seinfeld” and Cassidy is in good voice as his more debonair friend. And, he looks a lot like his late father Jack Cassidy with his distinguished white hair. But his hot body, much on display at the end of the second act, makes him less distinguished and more just hot!

And let’s not forget the ladies. Both actresses are amiable TV stars that you expect to find pleasant but they actually bring more character and personality to their roles then you’d expect. Get your last minute tickets at www.reprise.org. Oh, and if you don’t know LA, you should ask everyone to help you find the theatre as the address is not on a GPS system! But it can be found in a tree lined country backroad behind the Veteran’s Administration building.

And for people who are in San Francisco, you can get camp and trannies for $20! See some of our popular drag queens, including my dear friend Heklina, in “The Golden Girls Christmas Episodes.” These campy reenactments of classic TV can make any grinch give back Christmas. Learn how to get tickets through Heklina’s website. But it plays Thursday, Friday and Saturdays through Dec. 27 (except Christmas).

And the New Conservatory Theatre Center always has great prices for shows! Closing Dec. 21 is another gem from Douglas Carter Beane – “As Bees in Honey Drowns.” But I can’t wait to get out there to see “Zanna Don’t!,” which plays through January 18. I saw the off-Broadway musical about a topsy-turvy world in which being gay was the norm and straight was the minority. It’s a cute and clever show and as I couldn’t get through Fausto and Mark’s heads, it is not a retelling of “Xanadu” – it just plays with the title. (The musical “Xanadu” just starting touring – so keep your eye for it – and it’s book is by Douglas Carter Beane, I guess he’s our savor for good theatre in this poor economy.)

And last but not least, regional theatre is getting more cutting edge – and regional is always less expensive. In the Bay Area, I have enjoyed many a show at the Willows Theatre. Starting next month is “Evil Dead – the Musical” – can’t wait to see that and I will tell you all about it. And then coming later in the season is “Pageant,” which did very well a few seasons back in San Francisco. Since the Willows is in the East Bay, I hope they maintain the drag queens play the parts of competing beauty queens instead of having women play the roles, God forbid. And the Willows will also present “Hats” (about red hat ladies) and “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” – you can get a better season than that!

Now that’s enough about theatre!

There are several recipes for these cookies online but this is my favorite. Hints: to make nuttier I use peanut M&Ms and use a metal spoon to stir – a wooden one will break!

And once Christmas is over, New Year’s is right around the corner. Most hotels in metropolitan cities are at their premium on New Year’s Eve. But if you are going to be downtown San Francisco, ask for the FEAST rate at the Hotel Mark Twain and you’ll get $20 off your room for New Year’s Eve!

And if you’re looking for something in San Francisco to do downtown that’s fun and festive, Infusion Lounge, which technically opens in January, is having a special New Year’s Eve event. They have great packages for New Year’s Eve-whether you’re going solo as a couple or need a reserved table for a group.

It’s an easy gig for Fey since she doesn’t have to write much material as most of it is just ludicrous quotes from Palin herself.

Obama and McCain meet for their first ever U.S. presidential debate- polls show that swing voters favored Obama overall, even though McCain put out banner ads earlier in the day declaring himself the winner! Do you think he’s a little out of touch?

Diaper Fasion Shows are being held in Japan with hopes to reducing the stigma of diaper use for adults. Will Louis Vitton be putting out a new line of pampers?

Or better yet, will designing diapers become a challenge on Project Runway? We can see the judges proclaiming “You aren’t showing us anything new here” or “Honestly, white is so passe” or maybe host Heidi Klum saying “We ask you to come up with something to make shizer in, and this is what you give us?”

And our hats of to movie star Paul Newman, the actor best known for playing a closet gay football hero opposite Liz Taylor in the film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and his delicious line of salad dressings. He died over the weekend at the age of 83.

Being in San Francisco and Las Vegas and meeting up with YOU, our listeners in both of these fabulous cities was a real treat and a sign of great things to come from our show. A judge has ruled that content owners must consider fair use before sending takedown notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”). Considering the “shoot them all let God sort them out” legal approach many labels use, it’s a refreshing breath of fresh air for anyone who has any type of content on the internet. Now all those fabulous drag queens who lip sync to songs on MySpace and YouTube only to get it pulled have something to fight back with. I can still see the ocean of drag queens all lip sycning to Jennifer Holiday: “And I am telling you, I’m not going…”

I’m sure it makes some people blush, but in the long run it may break down the barriers on using this vital barrier to help reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Still, some locals in San Francisco are getting anxious over the media attention, saying that they are worried that San Francisco will turn into another tacky destination full of gawking tourists.

A scorned woman is selling her cheating husband’s dirty laundry on eBay. In the spiteful listing, the jilted woman is auctioning off a picture of a pair of lacy black underpants “size humongous” and an empty condom wrapper “size small” found in her bed after her husband allegedly engaged in an extramarital affair with a woman named Kylie. If you’ve had a rough life and it’s your time to go, wouldn’t you want to be buried horizontally? A Puerto Rican man has been granted his last wish – to remain standing, even after death.

Special embalming treatment was used on the corpse of 24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina to keep him on his feet for his three-day wake. I’m sure that must have been a sight to see the guy standing upright, dressed in his favorite Yankee basball cap, mourned by relatives while being propped upright in the family living room.

and the man who’s last dying wish was to be kept upright for three days.
