The American Psychological Association unanimously approved a resolution 157-0 to support full marriage equality. The organization states that “emerging evidence suggests that statewide campaigns to deny same-sex couples legal access to civil marriage are a significant source of stress to the lesbian, gay and bisexual residents of those states and may have negative effects on their psychological well-being.”

Observers say this will have a far-reaching impact on the national debate.

Miley Cyrus gives gays the finger, or shall I say fingers- she posted a new tattoo of an equal sign and a heart on her fingers and tweeted “ALL LOVE is equal.”

I’m sure someone at the NYT’s office just has it out for Larry, and jumped at the chance to misquote him, making him sound like a big ol’ sourpuss.

Both Madonna and Larry Kramer agree on this: “Don’t go for second best baby… Express yourself.” We’ve got to express loudly our desire for equality if we’re going to see real, lasting change happen in this country.

As people were saying during the 2008 elections, “there is much to celebrate.” You have to fight for your right to party. However, let’s not be partying so hard that we forget to fight for equality. Yes, I also just quoted the Beastie Boys.

As for my advice for Larry Kramer: you really can’t control what other bloggers say about you, you can only add to the conversation that’s taking place. As a fan of Larry’s writing and activism, I’ve taken the liberty of reposting his response on our site for you to talk about and share with your friends. I hope he’ll take our offer to come on the show to talk with us and share with the audience his brilliance. This is a man you can’t dismiss easily. He is a living legend.

Larry Kramer Responds to Some Misinformed Critics

I am upset this time, though, because I’m being tarred for something I did not say. And this misstatement in my behalf is now escalating beyond sane margins and I feel the need to step in and respond, to hopefully turn this into what I believe is known as “a teachable moment.”
I did not say, “Larry Kramer Hates Gay Marriage,” as The Times quote has now allowed many bloggers around the world to revise, rewrite, and circulate like mad bulls seeing red.

Here is what I wrote and submitted to The New York Times:

Our enemies have bottomless pockets to fight us with. It has been discovered that the biggest contributors to the California wars are and have been the Mormon and Catholic churches. I do not disparage any gay couple’s desire to wed in New York, or anywhere else, and in so doing feel and take joy from this act. But let us all recognize that beyond this euphoria, these marriages are hardly worth the paper they are printed on. And once again, I can only raise the cry: how long are we as a people going to accept such shabby and unequal treatment?”

This is what The New York Times reduced the above complicated message to:
“Larry Kramer, the playwright and longtime gay rights activist, said that for as long as the federal government continues not to recognize same-sex marriages, the celebrations in New York on Sunday would be misguided.

“’These marriages, in whichever state, are what I call feel-good marriages,’ Mr. Kramer said. ‘Compared to the benefits heterosexual marriages convey, gay marriages are an embarrassment—that we should accept so little, and with so much hoopla of excitement and self-congratulation.’”

Now this response of mine has been headlined across the globe, from Broadway to the West End, from Kenya to New Zealand, as “Larry Kramer hates gay marriage,” followed by many commentaries about what a crank I am, what an old fart I have become, coupled with that classic gay insult, “and he’s so ugly,” ending with “when is he ever going to shut up?” As I said, I’m used to this. It comes with the territory. I just wish that ALL of us could read and digest and comprehend my complete statement as above and realize what I am really saying: We are being bought off, once again, with only a miniscule fraction of what we are entitled to as equal human beings under our country’s Bill of Rights.

Believe me when I say that I very much want to get married to my partner, but only when that marriage is equal to what heterosexual marriages convey by law, the law of the United States, and not just New York State.

And I do not disparage those who choose to marry under the present woefully unequal conditions. I just wish that they, and all gay people everywhere, would realize that they are accepting so little when we are pledged so much more by and in this one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

When the recently signed same-sex marriage law goes into effect on Sunday, July 24, same-sex couples in New York City won’t have to wait until Monday to get their licences. Officials in America’s largest city are opening clerk offices in all five boroughs on Sunday. Judges will be on hand to waive the usual 24 hour waiting period the state of New York requires after issuing marriage licences, and marry same sex couples as soon as they receive their licences on July 24, according to the New York Times.

Lady Gaga and friends celebrate victory in NY!

Lady Gaga says on Facebook that “I can’t stop crying. We did it kids” in reference to marriage victory in NY. She also took this fabulous photo with her crew saying, “The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice+equality. Rejoice NY, and propose. We did it!!!”

As the final votes passed the crowd in the chamber erupted in cheers chanting “USA! USA! USA!”

New York will become the sixth state, and by far the largest, where marriage equality will be extended to all people regardless of sexual orientation, once Gov. Andrew Cuomo signs it into law.

32 votes were needed in support for same-sex marriage.

You can’t escape the enormous significance of this happening just days short of 42 years after the Stonewall Riots.

The police have been asking the crowd gathering outside to move and open the street to traffic, and the crowd won’t budge.

The Democrat-led Assembly already passed the bill, with Republican Sen. Stephen Saland casting the extra vote they needed to pass the bill.

“I know my vote is a vote of conscience,” he told the quiet chamber. “I am at peace with my vote. It was a struggle. It was an extraordinary deliberation.”

One of the biggest challenges facing marriage equality anywhere is that legislators often overlook divorce and international law in their good faith attempts to bring equality to same sex couples.

When it comes to divorce, it’s not always clear how to split up the assets, or who gets custody of the children and when one country calls the union marriage and the other a civil partnership or union you may not even be able to get a divorce.

Today’s show is all about Gay Divorce. One of our long time listeners, Wayne Hicks who was born in Canada, found love and had a Civil Partnership in the UK. Later he and his partner Gerdado moved back to Canada and found himself in legal limbo when a fight erupted between them that led to Wayne being tossed out on the street without legal protection because their union was called a partnership and not a marriage.
