baby-faced, Italian, teenage pop-opera group: Il Volo.

Jimmy Iovine, manager of the Black Eyed Peas, AC/DC and Lady Gaga, thinks Il Volo is going to explode.

But I’m not ready for them to recitative all over me yet.

I’m not a big fan of opera, and  teenagers that sound like 35-year-old men is a turn off.

Oscar Loya, now 32 years old, was born and grew up in California. He moved to New York in 2003 and took part in several musicals. In 2004 he played at the premiere of West Side Story in Munich where he met his partner. In 2006 he moved to Munich and published his first album in 2009. He also performed the song “Miss Kiss Kiss Bang” with special guest Dita Von Teese for Germany at the Eurovision song contest in Moscow 2009.

Far from a dirty word, “lesbian folk music” is a term that has the power to pique my interest and make me run to check out the woman holding the title. While the stalwarts like Amy Ray and Jill Sobule are still around doing great work, a new generation has emerged to carry the torch. To the likes of Chris Pureka and An Horse comes Nicole Reynolds. The Pittsburgh native (and former attendant of local Goucher College) has a tiny, heartwrenching voice that is the perfect medium for some big ideas.
She busted out her powerful track “Like an Ocean” at the DC-are Iota Club for us back in January. It’s has a great message about persecution and self-reliance that should make sense for anyone who was told that they grew up wrong. Check it out!

Move over Lady Gaga, the Cho is taking back her gays! Margaret Cho’s new album Cho-Dependent comes out Aug 28th and the first video released features Cho as a killer whose “pride is stronger than your will to live.” It’s a fun song with Andrew Bird as her victim.

Lady Gaga has done it again with her amazing, never before heard song, that she performed at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball.  A must see and an amazing performance! We love you Gaga!!!

I dare a country station to play this.  It would be a hit as long as they didn’t identify the artist.  The minute the audience found out it was those damn New York faggots they would likely yank it from rotation.

This is going to look ranty, I realize, but I’d rather make a coherent argument, so bare with me.

I think the problem a lot of people have with Gaga is praise of her seems undeserved. She’s credited as a dynamic creative force when all she does is wear Alexander McQueen and release monotonous music. (The lyrics of “Telephone” and “Just Dance” are different how?) And based on her older performances and numerous down-tempo piano renditions, she doesn’t even seem to be making the kind of music she wants to be, only going with what sells.

She also (seems to) copy her lesser known contemporaries (Róisín Murphy, Karin Dreijer Andersson, Sabina Sciubba, Ebony Bones, and Bjork to name very few), who have been doing “her” aesthetic (to varying degrees) much longer than she has and make much more original music. The whole idea of “public persona as performance” isn’t new either. (See: Grace Jones and Madonna.) Then there is all the Internet chatter about how she’s reviving disco and dance (NYMag) and performance, which is unfounded. (Disco revived itself back when those flamboyant caricatures the Spice Girls were dancing around in costume and Kylie Minogue released Fever. It’s since been a staple influence in electro/dance for years now like in Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor.) If anyone has been upping the spectacle expectations of pop performers in the last decade, it’s Beyonce Knowles and Britney Spears. Even people like Kelis, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry and Gwen Stefani camped up their images before Gaga.

No one’s going to convince fans to dislike her, but I don’t think Jones and others (Robyn, M.I.A., Róisín Murphy, Tori Amos, Marilyn Manson, and sorta Alison Goldrapp) are wrong for calling her out as a bit of a hack either because maybe credit is due? Gaga’s been smart about is her networking and (largely) keeping quiet about who inspires her look. She got chummy with Perez Hilton (very early on), MTV, and the gays and that snowballed into a huge following. It’s not creative, it’s saavy.

David Byrne, the frontman of the legendary Talking heads and Fatboy Slim the electronica pioneer combined forces a couple years ago to create a musical theatrical experience for the Adelaide Bank festival of the Arts.  Billed as a “song Cycle” it was preformed on stage by two female vocalists.  The resulting songs are a genius combination fo musical theater, Latin misic, dance music and sotrytelling that tells the story of Imelda Marcos, her life and loves.  Ity is genius.

The songs have been recoded by a who’s who of contemporary female vocalists for release in a stunning new album “Here Lies Love”.  Appearing on the album: Tori Amos, Sharon Jones, Santigold, Cyndi Lauper, Kate Peirson, Roison Murphy, Nellie McKay, Natalie Merchant just to name a few (there are 23 songs).

It is epic, theatrical and very very queer in it’s sensibilities.  Plus we gauys are always suckers for tragic tales of strong women.  This fits the bill.
