This is a ball. An underground LGBTQ contest where participants compete by “walking” — showing off themed outfits and voguing — a stylized house dance that continues to evolve. They are competing for trophies and the hope to become “legendary” — famous not only in Chicago but the entire community, which now spans the globe. Balls found fame with Paris is Burning, a documentary about the New York scene, but Chicago’s had its own ball circuit for as long as New York — one that has its own trends, culture and history. And as the Internet popularizes the community, Chicago is seeing another wave in the resurgence of balls.

Gay bars are hard to kill as evidenced by Robert’s LaFitte bar in Galveston, Texas which was the first bar to reopen after hurricane Ike’s rampage through the area. The bar had three feet of water in it the day before and needed a little mopping up to get back in business. It’s now a center for the whole gay and straight community and is a distribution point for donated food. Their favorite artist at the moment is Tina Turner who herself survived a tremendous beating form another Ike.

Pollsters or tricksters? The Republican Party is working hard to confuse elderly Jewish people with misleading phone polls that portray Barak Obama as a contributor to the strife in the Middle East. The Boston Globe reports that supposed pollsters asked if you would be influenced IF you learned that Obama had donated money to the Palestine Liberation Organization or IF you learned that someone on the Illinois senator’s staff had close ties to Palestine. The pollsters aren’t really polling anything, they are just trying to plant lies in people’s heads.

And has social working overtaken adult websites as the nation’s most popular pastime online? Studies suggest that people are spending half as much time searching for adult content as they did ten years ago. The preponderance of internet searches are now for social networking sites. After the GayCo Show “Whitney Houston We Have a Problem!” we talked to Chicago funnyman Jim Bennet about his wonderful “gay voiced” character, a powerful media mogul who just doesn’t seem to like anything he sees in the show. It’s one of my favorite parts.

GayCo began as a lesbigay focused workshop at the famed Second City Comedy Troupe in Chicago. Remember when everyone thought Whitney Houston was a closet lesbian? Their first show “Whitney Houston We Have a Problem” was so well received that they continued putting on shows not just in Chicago but around the country.

The material still holds up a decade later, as the hilarious Jim Bennet and Andy Enninger with a solid ensemble wow the crowds at the Center on Halsted until May 25.

Andy and one of two of his lesbian co-stars from the show decided to have a baby together.

Listen as we talk with Andy and Jim about being a gay sperm donor, gentrifying yourself, Chinese license plates and why Mac users are smarter than the average bear.

Did you know that Jim spearheaded the effort to save Big Chicks, one of Chicago’s most fabulous gay bars? About five years ago, pressure from developers got the city to start enforcing some very old zoning laws in order to get the long-term Uptown bar to shut it’s doors.

The irony here is that business like Big Chicks help to turn the Uptown neighborhood around and make it a desirable place to live in Chicago. It also was the first regular venue where we did our live Feast of Fools shows ten years ago. Can you believe it?

Because of Jim and other activists efforts, we were able to put pressure on the city and state government, passing a state law to allow the bar to stay. Needless to say, drinks are on the house for Jim.

Is this somewhat famous person gay? Jim and Andy are convinced he’s gay, in a gay show, with a gay theater company, but he’s just not ready to come out. What do you think?

We found the great site on Jim Pickett’s excellent LifeLube blog, which is always a great resource for cutting edge gay health news with a spicy twist.

Although the site does a great job at throwing those myths into the wind, we still can find the “newly awakened bicyclist” and “I used to be a heroin addict hooker but now I’m a poetry studies major” in the group of people.
