Dawn French, “It Should Have Been Me”

May 2, 2007 · 24368 views

From the hit Brit-com “The Vicar of Dibley” (to be remade for US TV later this as “The Minister of Divine,” starring Kirstie Alley). “It Should Have Been Me,” recorded over the years by a raftload of divas including Gladys Knight, Yvonne Fair, and Adeva, has inevitably become a lip-synch classic. Lady Bunny‘s rendition was so masterful that Sister Dimension (the pickle in “Pickle Surprise”) actually hired her to perform it during his wedding (yes, to a woman!). Thank you to NYC listener Tim for the clip. —John Q. Sanchez

Wait! There’s more!: Dawn French stars with Jennifer Saunders in an uncanny ABBA impersonation.

John, is a raftload of divas the proper collective noun, like a murder of crows? Or a pod of lesbians, or a grimace of Klingons?…

I love these video clips… keep ‘em comin’!

While you’re on the subject of French and Saunders doing musical parodies, check out French as Bjork in this parody of the Big Time Sensuality video

And this Fleetwood Mac parody where Dawn French plays a camera hogging Stevie Nicks while Jennifer Saunders as Christine McVie tries desperately to get a little attention for herself from the background. And whoever is playing Mick Fleetwood is dead on!

  3. And while you are at it, check out Jennifer Saunders’ dead-on spoof of Cher:

Dawn French does a decent Sonny Bono, too.

  5. I love the look on the brides face a few seconds before she got hit. It was of total disbelieve and WTF at the same time. Very well done. As for the second one: ABBA meets The Mama’s and the Papa’s. Nice work too.
