Mercury poisoning may turn the white ibis gay. Researchers have discovered that high amounts of mercury in the bird’s diet alters their mating habits and may turn some birds gay. Although, homosexuality is found in many other species of birds, this is first time that it has been observed in the white ibis.
And while it’s not about gay birds, check out the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. It’s a good little read about the ibis as an omen for death.

I’ll bet if there’s any causal link, it’s from mercury poisoning causing brain damage which in turn causes personality changes, like that guy who got the railroad spike through the head, or those many test cases featured in John Waters’ documentary “A Dirty Shame”.
