On today’s podcast we interviewed Michael Davis about the history of one of the greatest children’s TV shows, Sesame Street, and its affect on our culture. One significant moment in the show’s history was how it addressed the needs of HIV+ children and families by introducing an HIV+ muppet named Kami to the South African version of the show, Takalani Sesame.
Even though the character never appeared in the American version of Sesame Street, the haters in the US were up in arms about an HIV+ muppet. The character has done a world of good in dealing with the horrible problem of AIDS in Africa and clearing up misconceptions people may have about this disease.

It is a so sad that the haters never take the time to full examine what they are attacking. To me it seems to be a knee jerk homophobic reaction where one only associates AIDS with a deviant lifestyle. It is very clear their narrow perspective on the world. I loved Sesame Street as a kid and I love it now even more. I’m glad it exist and it continues to grow and serve future generations with compassion and understanding and in turn hopefully creating a more understanding and compassionate society.
