In honor of the Spectrum Center 40th Birthday, the University of Michigan put on a reading of Dustin Lance Black’s latest play “8″.
‘8’ is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the case filed by AFER to overturn Prop. 8, which eliminated the right to marry for gay and lesbian couples in California. ’8′ is based on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.
‘8’ follows a proud tradition of documentary theater. Plays like The Laramie Project and Vagina Monologueschanged the national conversation about hate crimes and domestic violence. We aim to change the national conversation about marriage equality with ’8′.
It accomplished that.
“8″ was read to a full auditorium full of engaged audience members (including the wonderfully hilarious Larry La Fountain). If you have a chance to see it, don’t pass it up!
If you would like to hear more about “8″ or how to bring it to a university near you, check out their website:

The staged reading held on Saturday at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, was really fantastic. This is a riveting play, with fascinating characters (who are all real people). I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Dustin Lance Black has done an exceptional job turning this trial into an engaging, intelligent, very political theatrical drama. And the performers at the Michigan reading were really superb. Kudos to Gavin Creel, Barrett Foa, Daniel Reichard, Danny Gurwin, Maddy Wyatt, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and the rest of the very talented cast! And happy birthday to the SPECTRUM CENTER on its 40th anniversary! http://spectrumcenter.umich.edu/
