LOL and OMG Added to Dictionary

forever alone?

Google has no love for me- forever alone.

LOL, OMG, and even ♥ have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. These “initialisms” as they are called have been in use for some time in online communications and in the case of ♥ , t shirts and bumper stickers, but they are in such common use now that the dictionary has decided to let them in.

If you search OMG and LOL you get lots of results on Google but if you search ♥ , the heart initialism, there aren’t any search results which I’m sure will reinforce the Forever Alone Guy’ mindset “I searched for ♥ on Google and nothing came up- forever alone”

OMG first appears in a 1917 personal letter and LOL dates to 1960, though it used to mean “little old lady” and not “laugh out loud.”

I blame “Gossip Girl” for this.

Some people are against incorporating these words into the dictionary saying that the English language will die if this trend continues. I think, however, that it is a natural development of our vocabulary which constantly needs to be enriched by new words and expression. Even the most famous authors like Shakespeare made up expressions of their own and these words now belong to the literary treasure of Great Britain.
