World Record for Sodomy Sing Along

I find it hilarious that “YMCA” is such a popular song at weddings and such. Has anyone at a wedding ever actually listened to the lyrics of the famous Village People song? Now a stadium full of revellers in Texas has set the world record for the most people dancing along to/performing “YMCA”.

    YMCA lyrics by Village people

Young men, there’s no need to feel down
I said, young men, pick yourself off the ground
I said, young men, ’cause you’re in a new town
There’s no need to be unhappy

Young men, there’s a place you can go
I said, young men, when you’re short on your dough
You can stay there, and I’m sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time

    (Chorus 1:)
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
They have everything for young men to enjoy
You can hang out with all the boys
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal
You can do whatever you feel

Young men, are you listenin’ to me?
I said, young men, what do you wanna be?
I said, young men, you can make real your dreams
But you’ve got to know this one thing

No man does it all by himself
I said, young men, put your pride on the shelf
And just go there to the YMCA
I’m sure they can help you today

    (Repeat chorus 1)

Young men, I was once in your shoes
I said, I was down and out with the blues
I felt no man cared if I were alive
I felt the whole world was so tight

That’s when someone came up to me
And said, “Young man, take a walk up the street
It’s a place there called the YMCA
They can start you back on your way”

    (Chorus 2:)
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
They have everything for young men to enjoy
You can hang out with all the boys
    YMCA
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
Young men, young men, there’s no need to feel down
Young men, young men, pick yourself off the ground

    (Chorus 3:)
    YMCA
And just go to the YMCA
Young men, young men, I was once in your shoes
Young men, young men, I was down with the blues
    YMCA

  2. It’s not literal. But what do you think it’s more than implied that the YMCA isn’t an oasis for the Young Christian Men in its title. Lyrics like:

“Young men, there’s a place you can go
I said, young men, when you’re short on your dough
You can stay there, and I’m sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time”

“You can stay there, and I’m sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time”

“They have everything for young men to enjoy
You can hang out with all the boys
    YMCA
It’s fun to stay at the YMCA
Young men, young men, there’s no need to feel down
Young men, young men, pick yourself off the ground”

When you consider who The Village People were/are, the times the came out of, their IMAGE, plus their other songs, it’s clear they are not talking about hopscotch and checkers as the activities being enjoyed at the YMCA. The point I’m trying to make is that “YMCA” is about the wild, fancy free Gay-scapades of the 1970s and it’s ironic that it’s play it at weddings like it’s the most innocent, good-time party song ever!

  3. Heath says:

“You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal…”

Come now, Marc. You know he’s saying to wash your ass so that someone can eat you out.

I just remembered Fausto talked to Randy Jones about this phenomenon way back in 2005!
