I really enjoy this mashup, it’s the music equivalent of peanut butter and chocolate. Now we all know who won that cat fight! As Lady Gaga said to Madonna on SNL, “guess what? I’m totally hotter than you!”

Remember that Madonna’s own song Express Yourself was accused of borrowing a lot from Charles Rights R&B song by the same title.

Just to add to this-
I am flabbergasted that Lady Gaga is using the SAME chords and key as Madonna’s song! (the key of G) Exactly the same chords. You can lay them on top of each other. If she can get away with this, I really like it!
The Simpsons does this all the time (think of their Evita or Mary Poppins episode) so there is a legal precedent for it, where you could consider “Born this Way” a parody of Madonna’s song.

I wonder what the rules are regarding homage as opposed to sampling. Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” pretty much did both to Ben King’s “Stand By Me” for a recent example. And aaages ago P-Diddy was all over Sting and Led Zeppelin, sampling both instrumentation and vocal melody.
It’s more disappointing when musicians just copy themselves. My friends and I figured out we could sing U2′s “One” and “Staring at the Sun” as a medley, as well as Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and “D’You Know What I Mean?”. What does it mean, that they’re lazy or overly in love with their own work?
I predict that by the months end, there will be a mash up of “Express Yourself” & “Born this Way”. There are already some excellent ones of “Alejandro” and “La Isla Bonita” – “Alejandro de la Isla Bonita” (virtually the same song as well). I still love Gaga however. Its not like Madonna or anyone was that original anyway.

It simply CANNOT be surprising that Madonna, Lady Gaga, Brittany, etc. are not original. No one is 100% original. All art is directly or indirectly collaborative. Even the cavemen or cavewomen painters (who it might be argued are the original artists were inspired by natural scenes.) No art is uninspired and artists always inspire one another.
