This Thursday could prove to be the day that is the beginning of the end of the US military’s discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy under which thousands of able-bodied military personnel have been discharged since it was enacted. President Obama endorsed a plan to amend the National Defense Authorization bill which would allow Congress to vote on the repeal of DADT now with implementation to be carried out by the completion of a study by the Pentagon due December 1st.
I’m elated by this news considering Obama’s chilly response to the charges that he wasn’t doing enough for the LGBT community. If this legislation can get pushed through, I think my faith will be restored in the administration. I know it’s not marriage equality, but the repeal of DADT would be a major milestone in the history of our community. This will not only stop the senseless loss of capable military personnel, but also allow currently enlisted gays and lesbians to be able to live their lives without fear.
