How do YOU think HRC will react to GetEQUAL crashing on their couch?

USA!

USA!

I am flying out to Washington DC this Monday to help out with Veterans Lobby Day (no, not a vet, but I do believe in lobbying Congress) which is being put on by–among other sponsors–the ever popular HRC. Then I get an invite to this Facebook event:

Sleep-In at Human Rights Campaign Headquarters for Veterans Lobby Days

Start Time: Monday, May 10, 2010 at 6:30pm

End Time: Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 7:00am

Location: Human Rights Campaign, 1640 Rhode Island Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20036-3278

Description

In studying social movements it is the social interaction offered through a couch crashing mentality – offering spaces to those who can’t afford hotels – not to some (I say this because HRC has provided travel and accommodations for 20 lucky people who can’t afford to come to the Veterans Lobby Days activities on their own), but to all, that helps truly build community so that we have more solidarity to really fight for our rights. Similar to spending the night in jail with your queer sisters and brothers (which I just had the pleasure of doing again this week) a sleep-in taking place during political activity can really help bond people together.

So – HRC’s Veterans Lobby Days takes place on Monday and Tuesday of this coming week. People could arrive Monday morning carrying with them all day their sleeping bags and pillows, partake in Monday’s activities, show up at the 6:30-9 PM rooftop reception at HRC’s office:

( see complete schedule here: http://veteranslobbyday.org/?page_id=4 )

and then just go down into the lobby to settle in for the night. Then, Tuesday the group would just wake up and finish up partaking in the Lobby Days activities.

If HRC were to lock their doors and not let in non-elite queer people who just need a place to stay for the night while they are participating in the Veterans Lobby Days activities then the group would just camp outside HRC for the evening – or if the law would not allow that – just walk back and forth through the evening in front of HRC, singing, building community and having a great time.

The only cost for people would be their bus/car transportation to get to DC. It appears from the schedule HRC will feed attendees enough where at least one would not starve during the two days – so Megabus it for $20ish each way – that’s almost less than an HRC membership!

SIGN UP NOW! IT’S GOING TO BE A BLAST AND A NON-ARREST-RISK ACTIVITY!!!

Balls!

Though, I can think of ONE way that HRC could turn this into a PR coup…

Let’s see how HRC plays this. Do they get down and dirty and end this image of being far and aloof, or do they try and stay above the fray and look distant and out of touch?

Your move, org, your move.

Just FYI – this is not a Sleep-In that is being promoted by any organization. It is just an idea that had been out there that I and a few others are excited about doing. And it is an honest attempt at providing more space for more people to attend this very important two days of activity. We are in a very tight window to demand Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell be repealed. Now is the time we all flood into events like these – and we’ve run out of time to ask for things – it’s time to just make things happen.

I’m confused. What are you doing? You’re going to sleep at HRC’s headquarters during a party?

  3. Does anyone like couch crashers? Funny metaphor!

  4. Robin says:

We do not support Alan in this action. We have noted that HRC is committed to the repeal of DADT and for Alan to rudely does this in the name of veterans seeking repeal is wrong. He is immature.
