This is Ryan with 300 words (or less) to make your Monday a little less taxing. Last weekend, I saw my uncle at my cousin’s first communion party. He approached me with a package the […]

  1. Wow! I’ve never heard of this stuff.

    Hey Ryan,

    Miracle berries definitely have a unique affect on people’s taste perception and some react differently.

    The glycoprotein, Miraculin, transforms the taste of citric acids into sweet however this does not change sweet flavors sour. So what you heard “…berries cause sour foods to taste sweet and vise versa.” is incorrect.

    Also I don’t fell you meant to call yourself “arrogance” as much as “ignorant” but that’s why we like to call this experience taste enlightenment.

    There are certainly flavors that are muted by mberry. Mainly foods and drinks that would taste bitter. However the berry is being used to help chemotherapy patients for exactly this same reason. check it out http://www.youtube.com/mymberry#p/c/C28CA37DDD2B46CD/1/0yMHkYl6EHM

    I invite you to try mberry again using the pairing suggestions I sent you on Twitter. Enjoy mberry but please eat and drink responsibly.

    Many thanks for the summary! Quite the adventure.

  4. Fascinating, but how does it work? I guess by numbing certain taste buds?

    • I guess Charles has it down:

      “The glycoprotein, Miraculin, transforms the taste of citric acids into sweet.”

      For me, I just put the tablet on my tongue and sat stupefied and entranced in the magic. =9

    Hope no one minds if I add my own research notes to this, plus my experiences with miraclefruit’s archnemesis, gymnema. 🙂

    As Ryan said, miraclefruit converts the taste of sour to sweet. Gymnema is an herb that completely cancels the taste of sweet (I know, y’all are thinking “WHY would you do that?!” Apparently it’s recommended as a “barrier method” for those trying to cut back on sweet snacks). The effects of both last for anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. I did not try them at the same time as I feared my head would explode, but on separate days, using foods that were recommended on “flavor-tripping” forums. And I took notes!

    Miraclefruit +
    Goat cheese = light cream cheese
    Sourdough = Portuguese sweet bread
    Granny Smith apple = candied apple
    Lemon = delicious lemon candy!!!
    Lime = still pretty harsh and limey, but a sweeter overlay
    Unsweetened cranberry juice = pomegranate juice
    Splash of apple cider vinegar in water = 7-Up
    Hard cider = sweet sherry
    Chocolate stout = mellower, extra-chocolatey

    Gymnema +
    White cane sugar = felt like sand, tasted like water. WEIRD.
    Hershey’s chocolate syrup = baker’s chocolate in liquid form
    Bittersweet dark chocolate = felt like hard wax, tasted barely bitter, mildly salty
    White chocolate = like dark, but a softer wax
    Manuka honey = whipped salted butter
    Dublin Dr Pepper = oddly sharp, aromatic
    Banana = bland sour/bitter paste
    Dried cherries = salty, tart

    The worst that can happen with miraclefruit is succumbing to the temptation to eat whole lemons, because you will get serious stomach issues from all the acid build-up. Gymnema is just surreal, especially with the plain sugar having absolutely NO flavor, just texture. I recommend trying the former to anyone, though!

  6. seawall says:

    Oh, and this may be TMI, but since it was being discussed on the miraclefruit forums with no one actually volunteering to try it themselves:

    Based on independent research, miraclefruit does not noticeably change the flavor of semen.

    It does improve on pussy, though.

    You’re welcome.
