Part of what accounts for such massive damage is that this comes on the heels of Christchurch’s September 2010 quake, which was a 7.1, happened at night and actually caused zero deaths (apart from one ruled a heart attack) because no one was in the CBD. But it weakened the structural integrity of so many old buildings that this one (6.3, considered an aftershock) just tipped them all over like dominos, and caused more deaths because it was the middle of a work day.
Currently, 75 are confirmed dead, at least 300 still missing, many likely trapped under rubble. In a city of only 376,700 people, such numbers are keenly felt. And most people across the country had to resort to Twitter and other media to locate family and friends there because the phone lines were jammed and 111 emergency services were down. They’re still largely without power and water. It’s terrible.
What a tragedy.
