What is a little scary to me is the very end of the clip. He equates being “happy to be healthy and alive” with his stopping having sex “at the cusp of AIDS”, for which the audience gives a loud and enthusiastic applause. It felt to me a little like he was saying he might be dead had he actually maintained a sex life over the last 29 years. The audience seems to agree. The implication being that having Gay sex equals death.
That said, I think making the decision to be celibate is a legitimate choice, and Tim seems like a happy person with a rich and rewarding professional life, so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this.
