In the 1980s the political attention against drugs was directed towards suburban school children. A lot of money was wasted on celebrity PSAs that ironically got kids to try drugs by putting the idea in their heads in the first place.

Today comedian Brian Sweeney joins us to take a look at Pee Wee Herman and Clint Eastwood’s Crack Cocaine Ad, Punky Brewster’s Nose Candy and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rage against turkeys.

This episode was absolutely hilarious and I thought it was a great topic. I especially like the part where Fausto was talking about how crack and alcohol are taking down the black and gay communities, respectively. I’ve always thought alcoholism was worse than drug addiction. Most of my friends drink and a lot of them don’t drink in moderation. A lot of them can’t function unless they are under the influence. As for drugs … most of my friends smoke pot. I remember back in elementary and middle school, I had to take DARE. My DARE officer made it seem like once I got to high school, there would be people coming out of the shadows to offer me crack and pot and qualudes and other drugs. And I believed it to a certain extent. The reality is, the only thing I was ever offered in high school was a cigarette and when I told that guy no thank you, he shrugged and went on. The problem with the old PSAs of the 80s and early-90s is that they felt so disingenuous. They over generalized. I know people who sell drugs who have never touched the stuff they are selling. The whole vilifying of people on drugs really bothers me. Yes, there are some people you should just stay away from but not everyone who uses drugs sporadically are evil, grimy individuals looking to destroy you.

As usual I enjoyed Marc’s matter-of-factness, Fausto’s infectious excitement and that sweet, sweet badass Brian Sweeney’s snarkiness. Keep em coming!!!

  2. When it comes to drugs, I’ve kind of developed this superiority complex towards people who abuse them, basically like “you wanna ruin your life over drugs, go ahead, have fun.” I saw so many people I went to junior high/highschool with ruin their lives with drugs, a couple of them even died from using them (one guy I knew OD’d and another guy who had been abusing drugs since he was in junior high eventually committed suicide) One of my closest friends was a totally pothead, and used pills sometimes, but luckily she got out of it. I think recreational, occasional use of pot is fine, but to be totally honest, I have zero sympathy for most people who abuse drugs, if you turned to drugs because who were sexually abused by someone when you were younger, or something else tragic like that then I can kind of sympathize, but most kids, like the ones I grew up with, used the drugs because they could, not because their lives were so hard that they had no choice but to turn to drugs.

I’ll never forget all that anti-drug bullshit they shoved down our throats, the D.A.R.E program, the assemblies..so pointless

I was yelling at my computer, ‘Oh my god, Marc, what are you doing, no’, when Marc was giving the recipe for rock cocaine. Hilarious.

I kind of resent the fact that I wasn’t offered drugs in high school like in the PSAs. I wasn’t even offered alcohol until I was in college. I didn’t actually take my first drink until I was 22, and I didn’t take my first toke off a spliff until I was in my late 20s.

There’s really nothing glamorous about drugs or alcohol, but let me say, marijuana is just awesome. It’s just so great for relaxing at the end of a long week or loosening up at a party and hitting on the unconventionally-attractive Asian guy hardcore. That may have been too specific. Yeah, that happened.
