On Tuesday over three thousand folks, including us, rallied in the freezing rain at Illinois State Capitol to demand action on the pending Marriage Equality bill.

Today Brian Sweeney joins us to look at the fight for Marriage Equality in Illinois, and why for some strange reason neither couples nor families were prominently featured at the rally.

We love you, Brian, but boycotts don’t work. If 30% of 9% of my customers boycott my stores, my sales are taking a hit of less than 3%. I don’t even feel that. Not all gays boycott these companies, and gays are a small percentage of the consumer base. I can easily make up those sales with more straight customers. Chick-Fil-A is doing just fine.

The only political actions that matter are lobbying (as you mentioned) and protesting (as Marc & Fausto mentioned). Only if you have the means to support a lobbying firm and a lobbying firm with enough money can you effectively shape policy. Only if you are seen and in people’s faces can you effectively shape public opinion and the opinions of the political establishment. You have to show up.

I think the next issue of equality is FREAK. Mainstream isn’t really mainstream, so it needs to be upended. Gay, straight, bisexual, queer, polyamorous, furry, leather, and all the rest in the pantheon of kinky & strange need to let their freak flag fly for equality. Gays shouldn’t just be accepted if they are mainstream, and gays are the only ones in the LGBTQIA community. We need to all be seen and accepted, so we can all be mundane and realize the meaninglessness of life. That one’s for you, Brian.
