Today we’re joined by Sister Roma, one of the drag queens who spearheaded the protests against Facebook’s “real name” policy that they recently conceded wasn’t fair to people at risk.

Listen as we talk about how the talks with Facebook went down, why celebrities get away with having fake names on Facebook and do we have a right to privacy on social media websites?

    Hi Fausto Fernós!

I was hoping to get in touch with Sister Roma. My friend Princess Momo had her Facebook account blocked and Sister Roma was able to help her restore it. How, I don’t know. But I am asking for the same help.

I am so impressed with the LGBTQIA community, and though I usually fall into cis categories, having to bear the extra worry and angst from others is familiar to me. I have always believed: you are who you are on the inside, ever since I saw Victor Victoria (with Julia Andrews), and later, La Cage Aux Folles (with Douglas Hodge and Kelsey Grammer) on Broadway. I have several friends that speak on panels at events I attend on the East Coast such as the Wicked Faire (now Glitterdark) and the Steampunk Faire. My family doesn’t know my curiosity and interest and, sadly, would be displeased and stupidly “worried for my mental state”. Please pass along my deepest respect and please help!

I have also fallen under the same circumstances as Princess Momo, even though I use my legal name and last initial: “Bianca S.” The two Facebook moderators asked for a government issued ID, which I provided a picture of, but put paper over all info except the State that issued it, “Bianca”, “S”, my picture, and the expiration date to show it is a valid ID. They wanted my full legal name and date of birth too! I held my stance that based on their “terms of use” it is not required. So they “Closed” correspondence and I’m stuck. I have no duplicate profile to talk to my contacts and I don’t know how to retrieve my thousand pictures…

Though there are many reasons to hide one’s name, my reasons are for personal safety, protection against identity theft, and from government intrusion.

I ask for your help. If you can provide any, I would be grateful. Thank you,
    -Bianca S.
