This year’s Pride season kicked off with the worst mass shooting in American history as a man armed with an assault rifle killed 50 people and wounded at least 53 at a gay club in Orlando, Florida.

Today, we take a look at people’s reactions to the massacre, what it means for LGBT folks in Pride season, and what would Mister Rogers have said about the incident.

This wasn’t the first time LGBT’s have been the victims of an Islamic terrorist attack. It wasn’t even the first time LGBT’s have been specifically targeted. It was just the first time we were specifically targeted in the US. Every day in the Muslim world, Muslim LGBT’s live in fear of being discovered. If they are discovered, they will be lucky if they get a kangaroo trial before being lynched. Many will simply be dragged up to rooftops and thrown off.

The work for LGBT equality didn’t finish with same-sex marriage in the USA. We don’t get to declare any victory until LGBT’s everywhere can live openly without fear for their safety. We have a long way to go. We won’t make progress if we confuse the tools or methods of murder with their motivations. There is a hate-filled, faith-based ideology behind these attacks that needs to be addressed, or none of us, gay or straight, will ever be safe anywhere.
