Frances McDormand caused a stir with her acceptance speech at the 2018 Academy Awards by mentioning an “Inclusion Rider”- the idea that stars can make Hollywood more diverse by requiring that all people hired to work on a film reflect the world at large.
Besides ensuring gender and racial equality, it makes movies better. When asked this year if she had anything she’d like to add onstage, Frances replied “Nope, nothing to add.”
The 91st Academy Awards was a celebration of Black and Latinx talent, with many of the awards going to Roma, Black Panther, If Beale Street Could Talk, but some aren’t too happy with the white savior trope of Green Book which won best film and best supporting actor.
LGBT people also represented well with both the best actor and actress going to actors portraying Queens- Freddie Mercury and Queen Anne.
