It’s your one way ticket to midnight: the 1981 film Heavy Metal inspired a slew of iconic TV and film projects including Blade Runner, He-Man and The 5th Element. With its gratuitous sex, drugs, violence and musical soundtrack, the 1981 animated film Heavy Metal became a hit with midnight movie goers, who would love to get high and lose themselves in the film’s creepy futuristic world.

The animated anthology film, created by comedy film legend director Ivan Reitman, best known for the films Stripes and the original Ghostbusters, included a lot of great voice over work by Second City comedy legends.

Today queer comic book publisher Zan Christensen joins us to take a look at the cult film Heavy Metal, it’s influence on Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element and on Zan’s current project that he’s working on with illustrator Yves Navant- 13: The Astonishing Lives of the Neuromantics, a space opera adventure seen through a queer lens.
