We fell in love with queer punk actor Molly Brennan for the many different roles she plays in Steppenwolf’s new production, Ms Blakk for President– the true story of Chicago drag queen Joan Jett Blakk’s bid to become the President of the United States. Lick Bush in ‘92! Honey!
Supported by the group Queer Nation, Joan Jett Blakk ran for the highest office in the land to draw attention to the AIDS crisis and to anti-gay violence and prejudice. Joan ended up losing the election but she did inspire others to fight for change by any means necessary.
This amazing piece of historical political performance art is now the focus of Steppenwolf’s new production, Ms Blakk for President, co-authored and starring Moonlight’s Tarell Alvin McCraney with Spongebob Squarepants the Musical’s Tina Landau as director and co-author.
Today the unsinkable Molly Brennan joins us to talk about the many roles she plays in Ms Blakk for President and some of her other career highlights including playing Harpo Marx in Goodman Theater’s Animal Crackers and clowning it up in 500 Clown Frankenstein.
