This past Sunday’s Pride commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising which ignited the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Over the years, Pride has grown from small community based protest marches to corporate sponsored behemoths attracting millions of attendees and lasting 12 hours long.
We have much to celebrate: the decriminilaztion of same sex sex, marriage equality and the military’s lift on queer people serving openly. But there’s trouble in paradise: fascists are in control of the government and the media and they are working hard to undo all the progress made. Plus, boring consumer culture threatens to swallow all our rainbow goodness.
Today we take a look at Pride at 50, from our own shenanigans at the Chicago Pride Parade to World Pride in NYC.
Also joining us is Jake Tolan from The Reclaim Pride Coalition, which successfully organized the Queer Liberation March, which marched against the exploitation of our communities for profit and against corporate and state pinkwashing.
