Disney fans were thrilled last week to learn 19 year old singer Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The hashtag #NotMyAriel soon swelled up from the deep with racists complaining about Disney casting a black performer in the iconic role. Many fretted the new mermaid wouldn’t have red hair.

What ginger nonsense is this!

Well get over it because almost everyone is on board, or under the sea with it- Jodi Benson, the woman who voiced Ariel in Disney’s animated film spoke out in support and even Halle Berry, who we hope gets a spot in the flick, is giving it a fins up.

Today the merman of the Ethel variety, the hilarious Matt Brown, joins us to dive deep into the controversy over Disney’s casting a woman of color as The Little Mermaid and how Hans Christian Andersen, the story’s original author, wrote it as a personal grisly queer tale of the fish that got away.
