Attention children. Fx Network’s groundbreaking TV series POSE is nominated for six emmys. That’s one more than your shriveled up claw of a hand has digits. It’s not as many as RuPaul’s Drag Race at 14, but it will do, I suppose- for now. Bring me Candy’s hammer.
Pose succeeds because the trans actors, directors and writers involved understand how to tell the amazing stories of queer pioneers living in New York City’s ballroom scene at the height of the AIDS crisis. But, where are all the drugs? Where’s all the sex? And heaven forbid, why isn’t anyone dancing til dawn?
Today queer media pioneer Jack Ryan joins us to chat about his adventures way back in 1986 when he stayed in New York City as a guest of someone working on the documentary “Paris is Burning” which also highlights the legendary ball scene. Years before the film was finally released, Jack was intrigued by stories about balls and vogueing.
Listen as we talk with Jack Ryan about Pose, living through those legendary times, and walking the category of executive butch queen realness.
