Everyone is acting a little bit like drag queens these days. With Michelle Obama’s eye roll, female pop divas sick-o-ning costumes and the hit of RuPaul’s Drag Race, drag queens have gone mainstream. Shade has replaced the word diss, hunties!

Today we’re joined by film maker, drag queen extraordinaire “ Peaches Christ to talk about movies every drag queen must see- films that inspire and capture the very essence of being a fierce drag queen.

  1. Peaches,

I love your side stories. Staying on topic is boring. Going off topic really builds your thoughts/who you are. Keep doing those.

And I agree with everything you said about Ana Matronic. I was so inspired by that video that I performed as a dragged up gogo boy to that song at my queer costume dance party I’ve started here in Ann Arbor.

Will post a picture on Monday!

  2. Erin Tuzuner says:

I really enjoyed the show. Have you ever read Mother Camp? It’s an ethnography on late 60s drag queens. I’d also be interested in your thoughts on House of Yes as a queer film in the sense of subversion, even though there are no queer characters. Thanks for the history lesson.

  3. What can I say? I can never get enough Peaches in my diet. I’m a bit behind on my podcast listening but I did skip ahead to this one. Thanks for coming back again Peaches.
    Come back to Phoenix again!

  4. Peaches….I love you just the way you are… Go off topic as much as you want. I think it makes the interview seem much more like an intimate conversation with you than a more formal interview like what Terry Gross does.

John Cameron Mitchell – Yes, I want to hear what you are thinking. You’ve made some interesting films that have influenced both me and my partner. Shortbus was the first movie he just had to show me when we were first getting to know each other. And I have loved the music from Hedwig and the Angry Inch because of its delicious punk-cream center.

Peaches’ tangents are some of the best parts of the interview! It’d be so robotic if it was just like an endless back-and-forth ping-pong match. Never change!

  6. Fantastic show with Peaches Christ! Paris Is Burning is definitely a classic of drag cinema, as are John Water’s films with Divine. I am also a fan of Warhol’s work, both his 1960s films like Mario Banana (with Mario Montez) and the collaborations with Paul Morrissey. My favorite superstar Holly Woodlawn appears in Trash (with Joey Dallesandro, 1970) and in Women in Revolt (with Jackie Curtis and Candy Darling, 1972). Fausto and Marc interviewed Holly in the early years of the Feast of Fools! Thanks for being a living repository and archive of many of the greatest achievements of drag in the US!
