It appears this woman (not using the name for reasons I’ll explain later) was having a loud cell phone conversation on the Metro North train line from NYC (to and from Connecticut) and a conductor […]

hmm, I think it is not that bad, maybe she had a bad day. Sometimes when I am on the train I also cannot stand the conductor because he/she behaves like a police officer. Once I missed the stop when I was on a local train, got out at the next stop but the conductor accused me I would have done it on purpose. He wanted me to pay a fine of €40, after some discussion I just payed it but told him I would get the money back anyway and he got really angry as I stayed calm and grinned at him most of the time. It got so bad that his colleague had to hold him back because he was so furious. Before I got out I just thanked him for freaking out because now I would get definitely my money back. I called the train company, one week later I got my money back and a free train for a long distance high-speed train.

On Metra, the suburban Chicago commuter rail service, they weren’t so strict on where you got off. I used to take it daily between Chicago, IL and Palatine, IL and slept well past the Palatine station to Crystal Lake after a late night. The conductors didn’t notice or care. The only punishment I had to endure was waiting an hour for the next train headed towards Chicago to come.

That kind of thing actually happened with some degree of regularity but it’d be people that took the train all the time so the conductors would let them get away with it so long as they weren’t disruptive.

From what I heard about the German rail system your story doesn’t surprise me. It was entertaining to hear a coworker’s story about their experience with it . . . *to the ticket agent* “So the train schedule says it’ll be here by 7:15. Is it on time?” *shocked look from the ticket agent* “This is GERMANY of course it’s on time!” 🙂

😀 Actually about 30% of the German trains are too late according to a study from last year.

I don’t like the German obession with being on time even during leisure time, luckly the younger generation is more relaxed.

The closer i get to acquiring my own PhD, the less respect I have for the institution. I know some pretty dense PhDs. Although, I don’t know any crazy ones. One notable one, however, is the unibomber! He was a college professor or something. That said, being “well educated” means that and only that (i.e. one is educated in depth in ONE AREA.) It doesn’t mean you aren’t nauseating, annoying, fallible, unreasonable, or generally crazier than a shithouse rat! It does indicate you may be inclined to self-righteousness.
