well, the bill to appeal the bill got overturned, the GOP won, but apparently there was failure on the Democrats side too…isn’t comforting that the rights of people lie in the hands of complete morons?? ah, God Bless America.

It don’t matter how much Lady Gaga protests against the bill!! you know the GOP is gonna keep fighting to kill the appeal until the Democrats give up on appealing it altogether, or enough Republicans change their views and vote for the appeal.

but hey, the Healthcare Reform bill took many tries to finally get passed, so maybe it will be the same with DADT..then again in the end the new bill might even be worse than the current one. :[ what we finally got with the new Healthcare Reform bill wasn’t what it first started to be, so I hope the same dosen’t happen to DADT…

    • Actually it has not been “overturned” at all. There was no vote on the bill. It was a vote on a motion to cloture–to bring a pending bill to the floor. The Republicans filibustered–meaning that they did not allow for the bill to be brought to the floor. The bill isn’t dead and they didn’t vote against it–this is just a delay tactic. They are attempting to change the terms of the debate again so that they can have more say in the final bill, but they did not kill it.

Another thing to note is they were not trying to bring a bill overturning DADT to the Senate floor–that function is now ATTACHED as an AMENDMENT to another bill. A bill that must get passed. So when it gets debated again, DADT may or may not even get touched, and they will debate, instead other amendments and pieces of the bill.

In short, keep hope alive. Just in terms of this bill, we’re not dead. They won the battle, but not the war. The bill can be brought back to the floor by Reid later after negotiating with Repubs–and don’t forget their BIGGEST problem was not with what’s in the bill, but what’s not in the bill–because Reid won’t let them amend it. If that changes, we’re good to go. We don’t have enough Senators in favor of killing the DADT amendment, so it will likely stay in no matter what.
