Law & Order has had some of the most original and inventive plot twists I’ve ever encountered — not to mention an impressive stable of powerhouse actors. Law and Order is NOT formulaic – it focuses not primarily on the solving of the crime, but also on bringing the perpetrator to justice. You can learn a lot (on the whole accurate) about the rules of evidence, and on the tactics of plea-bargaining. What would be original about crime dramas is that they actually solve, more or less, half the cases. I used to watch these shows till they got so darn predictable. The ubiquitousness of the genre says a lot about the intellect of the American public. I’ll take non-fiction tv any day.
