  1. Thanks for posting this Blair! Is Feast of Fun an Open Source company? I would argue that many things about the show are built this way.

Our guests aren’t paid. Everyone who blogs on the site does it for free. 100% of the money raised from advertising, donations and merchandise sales go to maintaining the website, future upgrades and introducing the site to new people.

We’re trying to create a information hub that combines a love for unusual news and people with a LGBT rights angle. Our purpose is to make it easy for people to find each other based on content, and allow LGBT voices to gain prominent placement.

Marc and I would make a lot more money in other jobs, and sometimes the money that comes in from doing the podcast and site is enough to cover our bills. Sometimes it’s not.

When we’re having to worry more about the money than the message, the sharing of information I would argue the site and the show suffers.

We allow people to post anonymously or use Facebook to bring ownership to their blog entries. As far as I know, we’re the only user generated GLBT news blog, and because of that we’re not tied to the manipulations of any hidden forces. If people don’t care about something, it doesn’t become the “hit of the week.” Look what’s getting the most traffic this week: a short paragraph about Dan Savage calling to task the manipulative behavior of a gay couple wanting to “win” a contest.

One cutting edge, new feature is ranking comments. Not everyone has the time, interest or ability to post a blog entry, but everyone has something to say, and by liking comments, it allows others to discover the funny, insightful people who visit the site.
